Is this rod installable in heater with limited height above heater?
No No No. Turn off power, drain tank, unscrew two pipes, power cord should be long enough to alow you to put the tank on its side if needed, replace anodes located under plastic covers in the top of tank.I have just replaced my rheem heater after twenty five years because of rot from the outside cover causing it to fall over.Worked fine.
I suggest replacing the whole water heater instead of just the rod. Usually the water is at the end of its useful life it the rod needs replacing. You will probably need to do that soon anyway. However, if you do replace it and have no head room, you will have to totally disconnect the heater, lay it on its side to do the job. (might as well replace the unit if you are doing all that work.)
