Qwerty

QWERTY (pronounced kwerti) is the most common modern-day keyboard layout. The name comes from the first six letters (keys) appearing in the top letter row of the keyboard, read left to right: Q-W-E-R-T-Y. The QWERTY design is based on a layout created by Christopher Latham Sholes in 1873 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for the Sholes and Glidden typewriter and sold to Remington in the same year, when it first appeared in typewriters. It became popular with the success of the Remington No. 2 and No. 3 and No. 389 of 1878, and remains in use on electronic keyboards due to the network effect of a standard layout and a belief that alternatives fail to provide very significant advantages.[1] The use and adoption of the QWERTY keyboard is often viewed as one of the most important case studies in open standards because of the widespread, collective adoption and use of the product, particularly in the United States.[2]

I received a ku-0833 keyboard but no manual. What do the function key symbles mean? Also, where can I get the keyboard user's manual?

The US International English keyboard layout is recommended for those who are comfortable with the qwerty keyboard and need a variety of accent marks or symbols. It uses an intuitive method which works with most (perhaps all) Windows applications such as MS Office and web page software, while keeping the familiar qwerty layout. The installation details are below.

To use, press one of the five punctuation keys `? ~? ^ ?' ? "? , then the letter to be modified.?
' + a = ?,? " + u = ?,? ' + c = ? ? ? etc

Or use the right alt (or AltChar) key? + another key:?
right alt? + / = ¿??? + 1 = ¡???? + c = ©???? + e? = ???? +5 = €. ? This image shows many more.
iekeyboard.gif

Note that this system maintains the "qwerty" layout. However, the modifier keys `? ~? ^ ?' ? "? must sometimes be followed by pressing the space bar when they are actually intended. The system accepts common words, such as it's, without the space bar.

Layout Installation: Win XP:
Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Regional and Language Options. Click the Language(s) tab. Click Details, then Add. Choose an Input language and a Keyboard Layout/IME. Use Apply to finish the process; the Windows installation CD may be needed. The keyboard or multilanguage sections in Start - Help may provide details. Screen images of the installation are here. For Win 2000 click this Carnegie Mellon site.

Windows Vista: Click Start, Control Panel, Clock, Language and Region, Change Keyboards. In the new window, click on the Change Keyboards button. This opens a new window called "Text Services and Input Languages". Click on the Add button. Scroll & check the English (United States) - United States-International keyboard. Click OK. Finally, in the upper part of the "Text Services and Input Languages" window, open the drop-down menu called Default Input Language and choose English (United States) - United States-International as your default for all input fields.

alt+shift? rotates through several language keyboards. Checking the Enable Indicator On Taskbar puts the default language on the taskbar. Or click the taskbar language icon to switch to another language. In Win XP, click the Preferences section for these steps.

hope this helps

Garmin Nuvi 1200 does not have a qwerty keyboard, I would like to know where i could download one for the system

I have a Nuvi 1100 and I added the qwerty keyboard editing the british english keyboard file(en_GB.kbd). Open it with wordpad and change the "true" with a "false" like this: <group name="QWERTY" priority="1" wide_screen_only="false">
Then, go to tools, settings, language and change it to british english and you are done!

No qwerty keyboard

hi! i just had my "missing qwerty keyboard" problem solved today!  im from hong kong and just got my viewty the other day, when i realised that i didnt have the qwerty, and there were no answers anywhere (manual, online...) i brought my phone back to the store.  apparently, eventhough the phones' language has been set to english, you'll still have to set the "writing language" back to english.  you can do this by going to: create new message >> message >> clicking on "options" (button at the bottom left of the screen) >> writing language >> then choose "English" >> OK >> and viola!!  you'll see a confirmation that "language has been changed"
you can double-check by clicking on that drop-down menu button with the "pen icon & A" that allows you to choose text input preferences.  you should be able to find "keyboard" there.

enjoy!!

(btw, i love my viewty!!  best phone ever!  i hope youre enjoyin your phone as much as i am!)
