SOURCE: Coleman rooftop a/c unit, fan runs, compressor come on/off

First of all, Shut off power to A/C unit. !! Next,You need to remove the filter /cover ceiling assy, and with a flashlight, look way up inside and you'll see the cooling fins etc, that look similar to the back of the AC on the roof. If they appear dusty/dirty, then they need to be cleaned. I use a shop vac with a couple of extra extensions to reach, and duct tape a pot scrubber brush (half round or round with nylon bristles) to the extension. Then start as high as you can get on the fins, and come straight down, kind of like combing the fins, but not pressing super ******* them. Move over, and down again, until you get them all, or at least as much as you can. (Thats basically the same as your return air at home) I use the nylon scrubber because the brush attachment with vacuum is usually softer bristles, and doesn't get in there as well. If yours does, great.Make sure you wash out your foam filter in a little dish soap & water before you put inside cover/filter back up. Now to the best part, The upper unit on the roof. You need to remove the plastic cover, by removing the 4 screws holding it on, or if it's dometic type, screws all around near the bottom of the cover, and lift it off. The front of the colemans have a lip that the cover is down over, so you may have to pull cover forward & up, then it should all lift up & off. Here's a spot to be real careful, and ready for wasps & bees. Very few, if any that I've done over the years, haven't had a bees or wasps nest under them, so if you can do it on a cloudy day, or at least be ready to move quick, and have a wasp blaster spray with you, it may be smart. Just don't forget your on a roof when you start moving !! Another thing to remember too, is that the roof can be very slippery when wet, or dew is on it, so watch out!! Be careful !! Now with cover off, look at the fins on back of the unit, and clean those the same way, or spray with a garden hose, and soft brush, and clean them up. Next, look at the opposite side of those coils/fins, where the fan blade is in front of it, and lightly wash it down as best as you can with the hose, spray nozzle, and a brush if possible. Remember when using brush, up & down as much as possible, to avoid bending the fins over. If you can't brush it , just spray it as good as you can, to clean it. Water should not enter trailer, unless maybe if you go overboard with spray, and pressure. If you have access to an air-line to use up on the roof, that's good to, but a lot of times, the water will wash it down better. This will more than likely cure your problem, if you get it cleaned out. At the RV resort where I work as a Technician, we usually have a flat rate of approx. $50 CDN. for me to do it for you. 95% of the time it cures the early cut-out of compressor, and people actually report it cools better than it has for a couple of seasons. It has to be clean to do it's job properly. When those areas are dirty, the upper unit (compressor etc) has to work so hard to cool, it overheats & cuts out, until compressor cools down a bit, then comes back on, until it heats up too much again, and kicks out again. That's why it doesn't do it as much in cooler times, because compressor doesn't get as hot. Your also shortening the life of your unit too.

SOURCE: Wiring diagram needed RV rooftop coleman

Motor1258,
Thanks for the response, to be more specific, the nine pin connector was damaged, but I was able to connect the wires back to main unit panel. I am ready to hook to the hunter thermostat and do not know which wires to connect to. This is my problem and I do not want to short something out. Hope this helps, I want to get it installed again. Thanks again for caring....Jerry

Btu of coleman 7830-901

That should be a 30,000 Btu unit. Its been a while since I worked on them. The 78 is the series or model, the 30 is the capacity or btu's and the 901 indicates it is a Copeland compressor.

Coleman 8000 fan works not cooling or heating

sounds like the compressor is not running. the controller (thermostat) may be at fault, or there may be a wiring problem, either in the lower unit or probably in the upper section.

I have a Coalman Powermate 6.5 Hp 60 gal. compressor model C650C600VIB103. I want to know to connect the elect. cord correctly.

Does the unit have a starter or just a pressure switch , if just a pressure switch it should be marked with line and motor , the wires on the motor should go to the motor terminal and the line terminals are the power supply , if the unit is 110 volts make sure you put the wires on by color , the white wire goes to the motors white wire and the black to the motors black wire , if this is 220 volts it does not matter which wire connects just put the two black wires on the line terminals. One wire per terminals please.

REPPLACING FAN AND COMPRESSOR CAPACITORS WITH A SINGLE UNIT

Well, it sounds as if you have a Coleman rooftop unit. If you have a start capacitor with a PTCR (Postive Temperature Coefficient Resistor) then it is different than if you have a Potential Motor Starting Relay. Why are you replacing the run and the fan capacitor?

Here is a link to the documentation that you need. If you do not have a Coleman and it is in fact a Duo-Therm, let me know the model number and I will be able to pull up the wiring schematic.

Thanks,

Jeff

Coleman Mach 15 AC just quit. no compressor sound, no fan

If this is a ducted unit, check the thermostat. It has a fuse for protection that may have blown. If the fuse is fine and you have power to the upper units control box, check for 120V incoming power at the control box and also check for incoming 12V on the Yellow and GH wires when tstat is set to high cool.

Hope this helps.

Wires on Compressor motor disconnected.

Some compressors come unwired so the purchaser can wire for 110 or 220 by their choice. This I would think would be possibly your case. Was this purchased new? In any case, here is a site where you may be able to obtain a manual,

http://powertool.manualsonline.com/manuals/mfg/coleman/coleman_air_compressor_product_list.html

and here is one with a similiar description but a different brand compressor.

http://www.thestuccocompany.com/maintenance/240-volt-air-compressor-wiring-advice-from-Campbell-Housfeld-25469-.htm

hope this helps. copy and paste short cut, in case you may not know, highlight text you want to copy by holding down left mouse button and moving pointer of mouse over text desired, while cursor is still over the high lighted area release left button and right click mouse, select copy, then put cursor in the box you want to paste, right click and select paste

I have a Coleman 6770 A Series roof air on my trailer. It won't blow cool air. Is this a compressor problem? And if so, would it just be cheaper to replace the whole unit than to try and repair this one?

Before the compressor is condemned, is it running at all? Is it getting the proper voltage? If the compressor will run and still does not cool the system could be low on refrigerant.

A replacement compressor is normally more economical than replacing the entire unit. It could be something as simple as a open thermostatic control.

2000 coleman mach

It is possible that the compressor has completley failed and is shorted to ground. The way you check is to access the compressor terminals where the wires hook up. After noting the location of each wire, remove the wires from the compressor terminals. Get a piece of sandpaper and shine up a small area on on of the copper pipes coming out of the compressor. Use an ohmmeter and check for continuity between each one of the compressor terminals and the copper pipe. If you have ANY continuity from any terminal(s) to the pipe, the compressor is dead and will require replacement. If not then check all of the wiring to and from the compressor looking for any possible shorts to ground (wire chafing, cuts, etc.) After that, check the run capacitor for the compressor. If the capacitor is failed, it will cause the compressor to draw locked rotor amps. Generally speaking, the quick way to tell if it is a capacitor or a short is to listen to the unit. If it trys to start for a couple of seconds and the pops the fuse, either it is the capacitor or the compressor is seized up. If it trips the very instant that it trys to come on, it is a short.
