Rebuilt engine 3800 and getting a tapping/ticking sound at cold start. Brand new lifters rocker arms are not new.

Here are 3 causes for lifter tick!
Bad Lifter, Dirty Oil Deposits, Bent Push Rod, The rocker arms will make a noise if push rod clearance is not adjusted right. God-Bless! and hope this helps you!or the rocker arms may be worn.

Cuts out when I increase the throttle

Blocked fuel injector in the carb, usually gunk in bottom of tank gets pulled through into carb so idle jet is ok but when you give it the beans the main injector is blocked and the idle jet isn\'t enough to produce increased power demand, ends up just sucking in air only.

also timing, leads, coil. check plug too. Red.

Have a 2006 chrysler 300, 3.5 with loud ticking noise during acceleration, also experiencing loss of power. Replaced both rocker assemblies and performance improved but ticking is still there.

sounds like bad valve seats or seals do you have a oil pressure gauge on your dash.check the pressure.then check your return ports on top of the head thats giving you the problem see if the oil is returning to the oil pan.sometimes the return ports become blocked and the oil stays on top of the head.and see if the oil supply is making up to the head.hope this helps.mark

I dented my oil pan and now rocker panel ticking.

if the oil pan is dented up to where it touches the oil pump the engine is not getting oil rockers are clacking . every time you start the engine you are damaging the bearings if they are not already gone you need to fix it right away drop the pan and bang out the dent with a hammer hope this helps

Valve train noise

The ticking sound is most likely caused by uneven wear on the cam lobes. The next time you've got the valve covers off, take a look at the cams and you will likely see scuff marks on one or more of the high-points of the camshaft lobes. This can cause a ticking sound each time that part of the lobe comes in contact with the rocker arm. The only cure for this would be to replace the cam and rocker arms - which is not worth the many $$ it will cost. The noise may be annoying, but isn't anything to worry about. My Goldwing started making a ticking sound at about 90,000 miles - and continues to this day, now with more than 169,000 miles on the engine.
Uneven cam lobe wear can also cause lateral movement of the rocker arms - and a ticking sound as the rockers move slightly sideways on their shafts (note the springs on the shafts that hold the rockers lightly to one side).
I should also mention that pitted valve stem tips can also cause a ticking noise. In any event, do not run the engine with less than the specified .004" valve tappet clearance as this can cause valve damage and compression loss.

My harley has a strange ticking noise just started today its at the top of the engine under the valve covers

Your ticking noise could be most anything. You didn't tell me how many miles are on your bike.

Now, on top of the head you have the typical stuff that's on all four cycles engines with pushrod operated valves. You tappets down below that push up on the push rods. The push rods push up on the rocker arms. The rocker arms pivot on rocker arm shafts that ride in rocker arm bushings. The rocker arms push down on the valve stems that are closed by valves springs. The valves are also guided by valves guides. There could be wear in any one or more of these places causing the ticking you are hearing.

Now, whether or not the ticking warrants concern is how loud the ticking is. If it something that you have to "listen" for, I don't think I'd be too concerned as a bit of valve train noise is common in an engine with a few miles on it. However, if people are asking you what's that noise when you pull up, you need to have it checked out.

Pull the top covers off the heads and check for broken valves springs, missing or busted valve keepers, excessive wear in the rocker arm bushing. I hope this helps, Good Luck and ride safe.

Hi,Volvo s40 engine revs up to 3000rpm by itself, and will also drop in revs from tick over, then just cut out.Any suggestions would be appreciated cheers

Sound like the idle air control valve(IAC) is dodge, could try taking off and cleaning with carb cleaner, while doing that take off hose by throttle body and also clean in there inc butterfly, go and give it a good blast down the motorway !!
