You'll need a 3-1 start kit. The clicking is those starting components. We shipped one out yesterday for 35.00 and that included overnight Sat. delivery the part alones was 20.00 with instructions. Very easy and the replacement kit is better than the original parts and available at most any appliance parts store. Good luck.
The battery still may be bad. The fact that it "warmed slightly when being charged" doesn't suggest it to be good - instead it could have high internal resistance in one or more cells. A battery with this failure still measures a good 12V until you put a load on it. I'd take the battery to a battery store, not a lawnmower dealer, and have it tested there with an actual battery tester. If it's bad, replace it. If it's good, then it's probably the solenoid and that means you'll have to replace the starter/solenoid assembly.
have you checked the resistance of the pto electrical coil against the manufacturers specifications?it could possibly be shorted internally (in the windings),lowering its D.C. resistance and making it draw more current when its switched on,or you could have a bare wire feeding it shorting out to the frame
