It usually requires getting a new digitizer which on a cell phone is cheapish but for a larger screen it can get quite pricey. If you post a pic i can give you better idea.
Back-light problem. Check and replace damaged component/s at its back-light inverter board, or replace this board as card basis. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. I would check the menu settings and reset everything to default. if there are calibration tests in the menu, use them. Try more than one source for video.
Not common but electronics are electronics , we can have failures right out of the box. Generally Sony is reliable and I must say that you should not have to worry about cost , Is it not under warranty - its only 4 months old !!
no you cannot change the HD to 1080p . if you could why would there be any 1080p sales???? most people cant see the differance between 720 and 1080p and most sat./and cable HD is only 720p anyway
