Take it out if you can and take a good air hose through it or if you can not saying put it back together for 24 hours dip it in water n soap make sure it's dry then get a grease gun and hit the moving parts of the motor with grease and put the motor back in plug all wires back up the right way and done

On the bottom of the dirt devil have to remove cover plate with screws and replace belt on motor

Make there is no obstruction clogging the hose inlet btween hose and container unplug when checking and put togather prior to checking and keep hands and fingers clear when doing so.

Most vacs have a reset button by the coard where coard goes in to the housing there is a small pin hole about the size of a ink pin insert til it ckiks ,but there mak be dust obstructing vents causing it to over heat always unplug proir to working on any mechanical or electrical device ane it yuo tahe it apart put ti back togather prior to powering it up.

Why would you want to put in a broken belt?

Turn the machine upside down. There are two clamps that hold the sole plate on, un click then. This will reveal the 'belt alley' where the belt runs from the motor to the roller. Lift the roller out of the slots. Take this time to clean all the hair and threads off the roller.

Put the new belt over the wooden pulley on the roller and put it almost back in. Put the other end of the belt over the motor shaft. Stretch the belt by returning the roller to its slot. Put the sole plate back on - snap the clips - Presto.

The Pumps on these go bad after a couple of months. They rust and will sometimes spray and other times not then eventually not work at all. If your a handy man pull the top off it and remove the pump motor and replace it yourself. The part number is 603-5029 you can put this number in google shipping and get it to your door for about $15 and replace it yourself or have a friend do it. Ebay has tons of them once again just put in the part number and a list of them will come up.

Turn the vacume upside down. Remove the 5 screws on the bottom plate. 3 are near the brush roll, and 2 are near the back. Remove the bottom plate. take the belt off the motor end. pull up on both ends of the brush roll. Put new brush roll on making sure that you put both ends to the new position, not old. ( it is marked on one end, and there are marks on the side that goes up so the can match.)(If putting back the old brush roll you can switch to the old position. After a year or two you can switch the new brush roll to the old position.) Put the bels back on the motor shaft and then stretch and start the belt on the brush roll and rotate the brushroll by hand untill the belt is all the way on.
put the bottom plate back on and tighten the 5 bottom screws.

It is easier when you also take the top off. Then you can put the belt over the roller and re-install it, then put the bottom plate back on, then turn it over, undo the motor and put the belt on the motor pulley, re-install the motor and put the rest back together. To remove the top, thewre are a couple of scres from the bottom, then from the top, remove the Hoover emblem, there is a screw there to remove and the top will come off.
