Look for a vacuum line off or something stopping vacuum-operated doors from being able to open and/or close doors in or under the dash, or near the floor.
not sure why you want to bypass it , this gismo moves damper under dash to allow wether you get cold or hot air out of vents depending on what you select on dash control (hi /low vents) if theres a problem with it most times it comes from ac condensate collection pan drain clogging up and water spills over into duct work rusting the damper shafts making it impossible for damper movers to move them , producing a fault or hot or freezing cold air all the time , sorry no easy fix for this but removing underdash ductwork and cleaning / replacing them lots of hours upside down with your feet on seats and head under dash , just kidding ...... most times we just take front seats out that makes plenty of room
If it blows thru other vents, your air ducts may have come loose. If you don't get any cool air, your coolant is low (it evaporates during the time and below some point it will not circulate anymore). Also the aircon blower can be faulty.
Look up in the vents with a flashlight, some times an errent object placed on the dash finds its way down the defroster vent and into the plenum. These items tend to keep the doors that dirrect the air from moving.
The air/con ducts can get a buildup of '****' in them. The dealer will charge a lot to fix this.Get some Glen 20(anti-bacterial spray) and with the vents in recirculating cycle, spray it in the inlet vents under the dash in the footwell area. Also get a spray called odour-off.Use this also. For about 10 dollars you can fix the problem. It works. The smoke coming out is usually condensation mist and nothing to worry about.Hope this helps
