Lights come on, timer works, nothing else happens. What is problem?
In the last week the dryer started to squeak and moved to growling. Yesterday it stopped working. The lights are on and the timer working but that is all.

Try running it with the hose off at the rear. The condition you are describing are indicative of overheating. The High Limit Thermostat is cutting in and out as designed. There is also a Thermal Fuse, and when that gives out, it doesn't reset and will need to be replaced.
Last week i had my Neptune dryer come up with this 8.8 error code and wouldn't start. so i called the Maytag people and they claimed there is no such error code so they sent out a tech (free of charge ) :) and he tested it and found nothing wrong and i had remembered that last week it was working fine when it was warm outside but now that it is cold below 40 deg. it does not want to work so i thought that this has something to do with the the dryer sitting in the room outside where it is cooler that it is inside so i got a heating pad and i placed it under the sensor that sits on the bottom of the dryer to see what would happen but no avail so then i moved the heating pad to the control panel area on the back and turned on the heating pad for 20 minutes on high and came back and tried the drier and wow it now works so called the Maytag people back and they sent out a rep and i showed this to them and they were amazed on how this worked they are currently working to solve this issue Hope this tip will help Best regards Mike
Is the motor growling on start with nothing in it? Is the drum hard to turn? It could just be a worn out motor is all of the above suggestions are covered.
Have someone else look at the machine, I'm not sure about the last guy. Do smaller loads to ease up on the machine. It will last a lot longer doing more, but smaller loads.
Many dryers use rollers or wheels to support the clothes drum. When these rollers are worn, they can be noisy. You should replace the whole set of rollers at the same time. Here is a link to the part you need.
I am having the same problem. Dried towels last night. This morning, I loaded it, turned it on, it did not lock the door or start drying (spinning) but the timer started counting down. I pressed Cancel twice, unplugged it for a few minutes then tried again. Problem still exists. Any suggestions?
