We have had the repairman out twice to deal with the refrigerator not cooling. He has replaced the valve and motor for the ice maker and used a hair drying in the refrigerator to thaw out the compressor previously. The second time out he replaced a door hinge so the door would close securely and told us the compressor has an ice jam, and we need to thaw out the freezer to defrost it. I don't see any way to do this short of unplugging the entire refrigerator/freezer.

I have repaired my Sears refrigerator/freezer many times since I bought it in 1971. Recently, the refrigerator freezer section started to ice up and the temperature in the freezer started to slowly rise to about 20 degrees F and would not go any lower.
This happened once before and it turned out to be a defective Defrost Timer.
This time the problem was a defective Bimetal (Temperature Switch) that shorted against a metal tube in the refrigerator.
I replaced the Bimetal and now the refrigerator is fine - no frost and it now goes down to 0 degrees F, as it should.
I have taken a series of photos of the problem and repair of my refrigerator plus a schematic diagram. Follow this link for all the photos.

Also, make sure that you don't cover any holes or vents that are in the freezer section

I have run into this before and found it very helpful to re-level the refrigerator. By leaning the fridge back toward the wall about an inch helped keep the water and ice in the tray. Remember to remove items that block air flow in the freezer. Remove the ice bin and clean it then start over with the fridge leaning back a little. Hope this helps.

Tube sometimes freezes because of minerals in it hold one droplet at a time until buildup freezes solid. Replace tube first. Water valve allowing some droplets through can also cause this. Tube first-less expensive.

that is unusual for the ice maker to cause it not to cool, but definitely not unheard of. if the fill tube to the ice maker, or ice maker itself, is leaking down the back of the freezer, behind the evaporator cover, it would form ice around the evaporator fan motor. this would cause the fan not to run, and the temp in the freezer and frige would rise. the ice would melt when it went into defrost, but then build up again. you should remove the rear panel in freezer and see if you see any ice build up around the fan blade, and if so, find where it is coming from. I hope this is the case for you. much cheaper than a compressor or new frige if it is. let me know if you have further questions. good luck, shane.

Well, if the ice maker were working properly, when you poured water, assuming you poured A, enough water, and B, not too much water, you should have seen some cubes drop into the bucket. But since you did not get any ice cubes, I would have to say the reason your ice maker is not making ice is because you have a bad ice maker. Its not receiving water because it is not cycling.
