How to charge a new motorcycle battery - Motorcycles

The battery might need to be replaced and it can't charge anymore or it could be the charger is not working. Try using a new battery and a new charger to see if it will work or not. Or it could be the alternator is having problems or a bad alternator.

check to make sure the battery is charging when bike is running or maybe a battery draw

That happened to me last year on my virago 1100. Battery would fully charge, but not hold once in the bike. It was a brand new battery from GP Bikes. I took it back to the store and they checked the charge with their machine, which is better than mine. The battery was a lemon. They replaced it and the new one worked perfectly. But what a pain for a few weeks to figure out it was the battery and not the bike.

Is this a new battery or did you charge the old one? How old is the battery? What did you use use to charge the battery? Car charger or jumper cables are very bad on a motorcycle charging system. Answer these and I may be able able to assist.

use a 2 amp charge. It may take a while, but there's less chance of damaging the battery.

What model motorcycle motorcycle is it. I have had a simular problem one time with a customers motorcycle customer brings the bike in for the same problem i charged the battery then checked the charging all normal could not find the problem so asked the customer to take it for a ride being he lived close to the shop it did it again he brought it in and checked it it was charging normal so i just let it run and heat up checked the charging no charging. It was the stator when it hit a certain temp it stopped working you may want to try the same test.

A new motorcycle battery will not sit for 18 mos and still work unless it has been on a trickle charger all that time...Do yourself a favor and spring 4 a new batt....the one u have wo'nt charge...believe me....good Luck to you friend....Tim

try replacing your rectifire becuase that is what charges the battery
