Leaking tranmission shaft seal - 2003 Ford Escape

There is a seal on the input and output shaft and a seal on the top cover . A slow leak will have road dirt collecting on the leaking area. An input shaft leak will in time foul the clutch disk. An output seal will cause the drive shaft to be wet where it connects to the transmission.

seals depend on a properly positioned shaft upon which they run
most people when reconditioning a transmission neglect to replace the output shaft ( drive shaft) bush in the transmission extension housing which allows the shaft to move concentric to the seal edge
the seal then cannot preform its duty as the seal surface is continually lost and so leaks
So it would appear that the bush is worn or in the case of transverse transmissions a possible failing bearing or bush

Chockblock front wheels to prevent truck rolling, and jack vehicle up and place a jackstand under frame to prevent vehicle falling. Remove driveshaft, seal is now visible to be pried out for new one to be lightly tapped into place with a rubber mallet or hammer, along with a wooden block, taking care to keep new seal straight while replacing. replace driveshaft and check fluid level, lower vehicle and remove chockblocks.

There are three different seal sizes 90mm shaft, 92mm shaft and 94.5mm shaft. Make sure you have the right seal for your crankshaft.

u get a second look your self by looking at the transmission u dont have to take anything apart to find the leak the oil pan is easy so check that one first if u see any fluid on or around the pan then the seal is shot that dont mean the tranny will burn up, just keep an eye on the fluid level second the rear transmission seal is located at the back of the tranny where the rear drive shaft slips into the transmission if you notice fluid around there and on the drive shaft thats leaking also but like i said just because u have a few minor leaks dont mean the tranny will blow up just as long as you keep an eye on the fluid level. do your home work and find a good transmission shop that will gaureentee the there work at a decent price.

I dont recommend using additives to stop a leak on the transfer case. If the leak is on a shaft seal it will have zero effect anyway. Wynn's do have a couple additives that may stop seepage on gaskets but once again I do not recommend this. Fortunately, replacing a shaft seal only entails removing the shaft itself and then the seal can be pried out and replaced. Inspect the shaft itself as on a vehicle this old the shaft may have been grooved by the seal. This can be repaired by using a repair sleeve such as this.

Probably, go to the auto parts store.They sell stop leak fluid for the transmission.
Its really best to get the van over head (ramps?) and look and see the leak and fix it properly.It could burn up the trans out away from home if your not careful.

remove the gearbox ,then the flywheel ,no quick cuts ,or what often works when selling an old car and that to put in a tin of auto tranmission leak sealer in the engine oil ,it makes the seals swell up .

You will likely need to replace the torque converter and the seal. Sometimes the seal will wear a groove in the sealing surface of the converter.
