Tap on your shift keys, one at a time, while typing any character; it sounds like a stuck shift key.
If this does make a difference, you may have some debris blocking a key from returning to its rest position.

Really? If you type and everything is capitalized, your caps lock is on. Some models of laptops have an indicator light either on the caps lock button itself or above the number pad. it's different for the different makes and models.
Capslock on the iPad is done by double-clicking the upper-case button. Double click it again to bring it back to regular lower-case. If not, restart the iPad.
try cleaning the keyboard with compressed air and q-tips. If this issue persists you will need to replace the top case (ie. keyboard)
you might also want to try and external keyboard see the issue continues with the external keyboard.
Is the caps lock light illuminated? If so, you might have to hold shift and hit caps lock to turn off the caps lock. This is an option for old typists who came from manual typewriters that you might have turned on by mistake.
I have the HP Pavilion and cap locks does the same thing.
THIS WORKS EVERY TIME. Hit both the right and left shift lock simultaneously about 5 to 10 times. It immediately disengages the cap locks. It is a little bit of a hassle, but I'm just used to it. It may happen 3 times per week, but I LOVE the machine, so I just fix it this way!
