I would say your battery is not putting out enough voltage. Have it checked at any Auto parts store.

SOURCE: CAN I POWER MY FISH FINDER GOING DIRECTLY TO THE

Yes you can. Basically the red wire goes to the fuse box connection. The fuse box should then be wired into the positive battery terminal. The black wire is the negative ground wire and needs to go directly back to your negative battery terminal or to a common negative buss bar.

SOURCE: turns off

The first thing you need to check is if you have sufficient power going to the fishfinder. Take a multimeter and measure the dc voltage going to the display when the unit is off and also on. If this is below 12 vdc this is your problem. You will need to check for loose connections and possibly replace your battery.

If the voltage is good then the problem lies within the display. Unfortunately, you would have to contact Humminbird directly to return the display for repair or purchase a new fishfinder.

If you have someone that has the same or simular unit just slide there control head to the base just to make sure you have enough voltage and current to power the unit. If the other unit powers up then there is a problem with the control head. Then you will need to call customer service to get it resolved.

The depth reads 98 to 100 feet.

I need more details about the problem you are having to be able to help you.
My best guess is that your unit will only disply data between 98 and 100 feet?
If thats the case check the range setting on your unit. It may be set to only display that range. You can set it to auto and it will automatically adjust the range from zero to just over the maximum depth it is currently reading.

Gain failure

If you are 'testing' the unit by holding the right button and pressing power, the pmax units really don’t work with the internal test. What you are seeing in the test is what th humminbird factory computer test used to test it. That is really not intended to be used outside of the plant. If it works fine in normal mode then I would say that the unit is fine.
Best of luck!

Need the directions to wiring the humminbird fish finder piranha max 210

Wiring should be very straightforward, the connector on the left (looking at the back of the sounder) is the plug for the transducer, the 2 pin plug in the middle is for the power (notch in the plug cord points UP), and the 4 pin connector is for the optional speed and/or temperature sensor. Here is an install manual for your reference:
