Question about Rheem Pool & Spa
Rheem pool heater, M406A, display has failed and is only partially readable. It has a black spot on the display and I wonder if water has gotten inside it. When I first turned it on, it was blinking randomly and that has stopped. I can't tell from the schematics what part this would be. PC board/contoller? Is this a job for a savvy homeowner or call a pro?
The display is part of the pc board and it is very easy to replace. It is also fairly expensive part just to read the temp(around $400.00). If the heater works fine except for the display you can get by. Hit the up arrow button about thirty times this will ensure you have max'ed out the temperature at 104 degrees. From there with the down arrow you can count down to the desired temp. The mode button should work normally to turn the heater on or off as desired. This is obviously not the repair but it will buy time until you are prepared to replace it or have a technician out for another call.

Testimonial: "Thanks for the information! We also have a spa and I know that the cycle for the mode button is pool on, off, spa on, off. I can tell pretty quickly where the heat is going. Knowing the max temp really helps and your suggestion is just what we will do. We appreciate it."

this usually indicates a high limit condition.you must first ascertain if you have a component failure or a true high tempature condition.your model has 2 limit controls and they are both located in side panel on water in/out header

Pull the cover off the control panel. You will probably find a button which would be accessible from outside the panel with a paper clip or pencil but is unlabeled. On the board itself by the button, in small letters it should say "reset". Push the button and see what happens.

My heat exchanger was cracked. I found an old welder who knew how to weld the cracks for $100 vs $900 for a new exchanger,. Also ordered replacement seals for the 2 chambers. I used high temp automotive engine sealant as an additional sealant precaution. Also inspected tubes and cleaned corrosion. Works fine last 3 years. Takes some mechanical skills.

coud be several things, Do you have Gas and is gas toruned on. Is valve on. The Pilot could be dirty and need cleaned. $350+ sounds reallly pricy for a pilot assembly. Call your Gas Company and get an Estimate and a Qualifed Service tech. You may try turning Off the Power to the Heater Unit and turning it back on , and then trying to turn on heater again, So times after several atemps the valve will lock out and the power needs reset on Propane units.
