Step problem solving

My computer recognizes the HDD, it knows that it's a hard drive, but it won't load the data on it. It says I have to format the drive before using it. I have close to 500GB of data on the HDD.

SOURCE: Trying to format a 500GB HDD at full capacity

sounds like the SATA - PATA converter doesn't accomodate for a 48 bit LBA (to handle disks of more than 137 GB)

you need to get the correct converter, as this one is not compatible, you should be able to return the converter as not fit for purpose (needs LBA 48bit).

SOURCE: Help!! Western digital 500gb external hard drive ticking noise

Yes. This is going to sound strange. Put the drive in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer. Next day, take it out, hook it up, and see if it is recognized.

If so, under My computer, right click on the drive - click Properties - then Tools, then Error Checking. Check box Automatically Fix File System Errors. Let it run. If everything shows up, be ready to transfer wnat you want off of it.

Freezing shrinks the metal parts . Microscopically, but often enough to get stuck parts free enough to get working.

I just went through this with a 750Gig Book. now i have reformatted the drive (after transferring all over to new drive) and the clicking is gone and all disk checks are fine and i wonder whether to trust this device ever again... Hate to just throw out a large drive.

To save your data from a bad Wd Ebook you need to download UBUNTU and burn it to a cd. Boot from the cd. Do not install Ubuntu just click try it out. When it loads turn on your Ebook and iit should appear on the desktop. If not click the places tab on top and find it there. Right click the EBook and mount it. Now you have access to all the data on the ebook. Iy yoou have enugh space n your cpu hard drive save it there, if not you will need another surce large enought to copy the data to.. I have used this method to save many hard drives, flash drive and other unreadable media. if the drive is totally toast you are out of luck but this method works moost of the time. SOURCE: How to recover data from an undetected 500gb hard disk drive?

If the HDD is not detecting in the BIOS then It’s seems like to be a firmware issue on this particular series of HDD
for Model: ST3500620AS Firmware: SD15 Barracuda 7200.11 500GBytes

The one & ultimate way is to contact the nearest seagate center in your location to get the data back up & if your drive is under warranty then mostly it will be free of cost. (Not Sure about it)

I just want to copy files back and forth as in a regular harddrive. The computer recognizes the device (devices and printers), but will not identify it when I select 'computer'

Even though the drive is recognized, it is probably not formatted, which means you can't store any files on it yet. You will have to format it before any data can be written to it.

1. Open Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management

2. In the LEFT PANE, find the "Storage" heading, then find "Disk Management" and click it. Windows will show you a graphical representation of all of the hard disks installed in your system. Find the new Hitachi drive in the UPPER-RIGHT PANEL, and RIGHT-CLICK it.

NOTE: BE SURE YOU CHOOSE THE CORRECT DRIVE IN THIS STEP! If you choose the MAIN drive, the one where Windows is installed, you could DESTROY THE DATA on it and render your system UNBOOTABLE. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!

3. When you RIGHT-CLICK on the NEW HITACHI HDD, you will see the "Format..." option. Click the "Format..." option and follow the prompts to format the new HDD.

4. When the FORMAT operation is finished, you will be able to use the new HDD to store files.

There are MANY tutorials available which explain this process; read the section titled "Formatting a Secondary Hard Drive" on the following page for more details:

http://www.ehow.com/how_6026_format-hard-drive.html

Good luck; let us know how this turns out.

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect your hard drive

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA

the leads from your "((motherboard to your hard drive))" make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electical extensions or just replace them they could be faulty a computer needs its connections to continue its cycle and have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error
hope this helps

XP, Vista and Win7 recognize this HDD as an external HDD but I can not see it in Windows Explorer. It shows up in the bar(down right) as external HDD is connected.HDD= WD Scorpio Blue(1 TB). Model=...

You'll need to check and see if the disk is formatted and recognized as a logical disk. To do this, Go to Start, and locate the Run option, and type in diskmgmt.msc or you can go to My Computer, right-click it and select "Manage" from the popup menu. Then, at the bottom of the list to the left, you'll see the Disk Management submenu.
Once you're in the Disk Management applet, click on the WD from the list of available hard drives from the list, and see if the partition is recognized as formated. If it's not formated you may need to format it. If the disk is recognized as RAW disk, then you'll need to first create an extended partition and then format it with NTFS file system. REMEMBER, if you can access the drive from another computer and it's recognized properly in Explorer, then formating it will erase all data on the disk. But if you never used it before (i.e you dont have any data on it) then you can go ahead with the formatting, which should solve your problem if it's a software issue.
If you heard your disk clicking for a while in the past, and you had problems with it: slow reading of files, sluggish in copying files etc. then your hard drive may be mechanically failing and in this case there's nothing you can do to save it. If this is the case and you still have warranty, return the disk to where you bought it from, and ask for a replacement.

If this was informative and helpful please vote with a Thumb Up. Thank you.

Western digital passport 160gb external ( device not recognize

As you did not specify 2.5" or 3.5" I will give you both sets of steps:

If it is a full sized hard drive and requires power, it may not be getting enough power, have the AC adapter tested at a computer shop. If it is dead/dying replace it, if not move onto the next step.

Try a new usb cable, also available at most computer shops. If the new cable works at the shop try your old cable as well. If the old one doesn't work, buy the new cable, problem solved if it does work the problem is either in the caddy or your computer.

Assuming it's in the caddy, now have the people at the shop swap the HDD from your shell into a new one and test the drive again, as with the above if it works you're done. If it doesn't the problem is internal to the actual HDD. Time to buy a new external drive and send the old one for recovery if it has any crucial data on it.

Let me know how you make out and if needed I will provide additional steps. Also if you need data recovery help let me know your region and city and I will recommend an appropriate facility.

External harddrive (MyBook) not recognize

Okay, here is what you can do to just verify that you haven't lost all the data on the hard drive (HDD failure, due to the manufacturer or a drop or heavy shake). Download a copy of Slax Linux www.slax.org 32 bit version will work, and burn the ISO they give you to a CD. I would recommend using Alcohol 120 www.alchoholsoft.com. Boot in Slax, and see if you can get the computer to recognize the HDD. If so, backup your important data onto other hard drives or thumb drives. Then when you have enough data backed up, you can format the hard drive.

Now, to get really fancy, lets say you have a somewhat corrupt formatted hard drive, and enough data free to encompass the data you have on the hard drive. Well, what you can do is download a program called "partition magic" and do a partial non-destructive re-partition. Respond if you need to get to that point so I can get you a link to the program.
