Viking Rose 605 does not read anything but Win 98.
It seems to be unable to run on Windows XP...Therefore, I can't use my "Reader/Writer", thus, no embroidery!. (without buying $700 WORTH OF NEW SOFTWARE...) does anyone have a solution? thanks... I have a similar problem--own a Husqvarna Rose 605, but it won't read XP. I bought my machine used and it came with tons of extras including the 3D Editor. The disks are compatible with Win 95, 98, XP , etc. That's realy nice, however the machine does not recognize anything but Win 98. Since I bought it used, I can't register. I do have the model number, even original receipts from the purchase of all the extras. She sent everything, but never transferred ownership. There's plenty for me to do on this machine without the updates and I can get lots of embroidery downloads from the net, however I have to purchase a laptop with installed Win 98.
I hope my problem answers others questions.
An easy solution would be to buy a used laptop and a copy of Win 98 to install (yes, you can still buy it)11 :) Also, consider purchasing the Ultimate Box Plus with card (Compatible with all Windows 98-XP)An easy solution would be to buy a used laptop and a copy of Win 98 to install (yes, you can still buy it)11 :) Also, consider purchasing the Ultimate Box Plus with card (Compatible with all Windows 98-XP)

Ebay may have a laptop with win 98 but that is a pretty old OS. No way to register the software without contacting Viking to ask them to allow you to register her old software unless she sent you the reg numbers. She can't transfer ownership to you without those numbers on a certificate. Only originators of the software can allow you to do that by overriding her registration. Contact VSM and ask them if they will do this so you can use it.

Try contacting them...
Let them know what machine you have: Designer, Rose, Ruby, Etc.
What current computer OS you are using (you said 98/XP)
Ask...
And they should direct you to your satisfaction. They are really pretty good at assisting.
I would reccomend that you go to the dealer and think about upgrading your machine, I used to have a Rose. I upgraded and am happy I did, I think you can get the 4D with some of the new machines...if not deal for it with your new machine.
Being as you have xp looks like you will have to go to viking site and download a patch to make it compatable, I have a Janome and when we upgraded the computer I had to go to the janome site and download upgrade, the same would apply to the customizing software I would think.
You have to have the Husqvarna Viking Software installed on your computer for it to work. The first version of the software is called 4D embroidery and sells for around $400. You can see features of it on their web site.
You may be able to find an old computer with Windows 95 or 98. Make sure that it also has a parallel port for the older R/W boxes.
You may also find that the 4D Embroidery package will do what you wish to do and it is under $400. 4D Embroidery Extra is the $700 package.
If you only want to put existing designs onto the card with no manipulation, you can get the Reader/Writer kit, $199 MSRP that includes Organizer which will allow you to load 1 design to your card at a time.
Unfortunately, System 5 was replaced by VIP which was replaced by 3D which was replaced by 4D. I don't think that system 5 will run on anything newer than Windows 98.
I bought a Rose when they first came out. (1998) I LOVE THE MACHINE.
From 1998 until 2002 I used it all the time and made good money doing embroidery. I went to work outside of my home & didn't do much with it until 2007. When i tried to install the software on my newer computer I discovered that the software that came with the machine won't work with any operating system except Windows 98. I now have XP.
I dashed off to the sewing machine store to see if they have the newer software. I was thrilled to be holding the box with the new software until I looked at the price. (it's now 2007) $850.00. Yes, EIGHT HUNDRED. I believe they told me that the reader/writer box had to be replaced too.
I sure wish I had known that before I gave away my computer that had Windows 98 !!
I cannot afford that kind of money so now I have a very, very nice sewing machine that used to embroider.
I have the Ultimate Box and it works great on the Rose and my old PC. The Ultimate box is not compatible with Windows Vista though - good think I am keeping my old computer!!
The Designer SE software does not use a dongle. If you are attempting a "Smart Update" on the Designer SE and it asks if you use a dongle, just say no and the update on the machine will run. If you have 3D or 4D software, it uses the dongle and it will be USB. Download the latest driver for your software from the Husqvarna Viking website. The link is through the homepage at Husqvarnaviking.com/us . Click links on the left side of the screen for 4D Software, Help & Updates, and Other Useful Software at the bottom of the page. This will have the latest 3D driver. 4D will require the latest update to the software and a firmware upgrade to the dongle. Run Smart Update on the software and then get the firmware update that is directly below the 3D HASP driver on the Other Useful Software page.
