The quickest way to get out of DOS is to hold down the power key until the computer shuts off. Then during restart, hold down the option key until the drives icons appear on screen. Use the arrow keys to select your OS for start up and away you go..

It sounds like you have downloaded a Windows executable to a Macintosh system, and when you click on it it opens in the text editor, which displays the binary contents of the program, which usually contains the message "This program cannot be run in DOS mode."
Windows executables cannot be run on Macintosh computers unless you have also installed Windows, either under Boot Camp or under a virtual machine monitor such as Parallels or Fusion.

If you are running OSX, .exe files are windows only, there is no DOS mode in this OS.

Is this a trick question? There is no "DOS mode" on a MacBook Pro.
Do you have WIndows installed as part of Boot Camp, and your machine is booting into Windows? To boot back into the Mac, either use the Boot Camp control panel in Windows, or hold down the Option key after you hear the startup chime and select the OS X partition to boot from.

The Mac does not have a DOS mode to turn off. If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response. Happy New Year! Thanks, Joe
It does have a command line mode called 'Single User Mode' where UNIX commands can be executed. Get into SUM by holding Command S at startup.
To go back to the Mac OS X interface, type 'reboot' and press the Return key.
