My Wheelwriter 5 types faded and incomplete letters. We changed to a new ribbon, but problem is still there. Seems the pressure is not hard enough.

The solenoid for the hammer is probably sticky or the pad is worn.
This requires disassembly for cleaning, lube or replacing the pad.

Type is faded and old looking even with new ribbon.

Put in a multi part form, if the carbons print well then try a fresh ribbon,. not one that has been sitting around for a long time. If it is bad check for debris around the print hammer, If its clean either the print solenoid is gummy or the solenoid cap is broken.

If it types only the top half yhe platen is probably not all the way in. Make sure the 2 black latches are lined up with the side frames then press down firmly on both sides of the platen.

IBM Wheelwriter 5

Get a new laser printer, or even inkjet. They can be had for under a hundred bucks. It'll cost you that to get someone old enough to know what a wheelwriter is to come and look it...
