Using my yahoo.com as a third party so I can sign into my Mail (Apple) and read my Gmail! One is a POP3 and one is IMAP. Can you explain this to me so I can fix my account?

Hi,

POP3 creates local copies of emails and deletes the originals from the server, the emails are tied to that specific machine, and cannot be accessed via any webmail or any separate client on other computers.

IMAP stores emails on a remote mail server, you'll have a limited mailbox size depending on the settings provided by the email service.

Depending on your personal style of communicating and whom you prefer to get your email service from, you can pretty quickly narrow down how you should use your email.
  • If you use check your email from a lot of devices, phones, or computers, set up your email clients to use IMAP.
  • If you use mostly webmail and want your phone or iPad to sync with your webmail, use IMAP, as well.
  • If you're using one email client on one dedicated machine (say, in your office), you might be fine with POP3.
  • If you have a huge history of email, you may want to use POP3 to keep from running out of space on the remote email server.
Compared to POP3, IMAP allows users to log into many different email clients or webmail interfaces and view the same emails, because the emails are kept on remote email servers until the user deletes them. In a world where we now check our email on web interfaces, email clients, and on mobile phones, IMAP has become extremely popular.

You can either create POP3 or IMAP for both Gmail and Yahoo

Tip

Using Gmail as your Universal Inbox

Nowadays most people have more than one email account. If one of yours is a Gmail account, you can use it as your primary inbox to check all your POP3 accounts in your Gmail browser window. But do remember that you can check only other POP3 accounts only. You won’t be able to check Yahoo mail, Windows Live Hotmail, or other such web mail accounts. Also, not all POP3 servers work with Gmail.
Here is what you need to do. Open your Gmail account and click Settings-Accounts. In the ‘Get mail from other accounts‘ section, click Add another mail account. Enter the email address of the account you want to add, and click Next Step.
Enter your username, password and POP3 server. If you want to continue to access the account through a mail client or through the ISP’s own Web interface, in addition to picking up and sending mail in your Gmail account, check Leave a copy of retrieved message on the server. This allows you to read the mail in Gmail, but the mail will remain on the ISP’s server so that you can download it with your standard mail program or read it through the account’s own Web interface. On the other hand, if you plan on accessing the mail for the address only through your Gmail account, you can leave the box unchecked.
Next, check Always use a secure connection (SSL) when retrieving mail to keep mail snoops at bay. In some instances a POP3 account may not work with an SSL connection: if that is the case, you will have to leave this box unchecked.
If you want all of your incoming messages from the account to carry a label, such as the name of the account, select Label incoming messages. In Gmail, a label works much as a folder does. You can view all mail that carries the same label by clicking the label. Gmail automatically creates a label for the address of the new account. You can select a different label or create a new one by choosing the appropriate entry from the drop-down list. Another option is to have messages bypass your inbox and go straight to your Gmail archive. This would be a good choice if you want to use Gmail primarily for searching through mail. When you’ve made all your selections, click Add Account.
You can compose mail in Gmail and have it appear to the recipient as if it were from the account you just added. When a message appears asking whether you want to create a custom From address, click Yes and follow the instructions.
Gmail will check your account, and any mail sent to either address will appear in your Gmail inbox. To stop Gmail from checking the mail, click Settings-Accounts and choose delete next to the account.

It is not uncommon for a person to have more than one email account.
Most email service providers offer their customers a way to import email contacts and messages from other email accounts into the account maintained by the provider.

Some email service providers, such as Gmail and Yahoo Mail, have an email migration tool built in to their email interface.

Other providers, such as Comcast, direct their customers to use the TrueSwitch email migration tool.

Log in to your Gmail account.

Open the Gmail settings menu by clicking the pinwheel icon located in the top right corner of the window. Select "Mail setting."

Go to the "Accounts and Import" tab.
Click "Import mail and contacts."
Follow the on-screen instructions to import your address book from another email account into your Gmail account. Import Address Book Into Yahoo Mail Account

Log in to your Yahoo mail account. Click "Contacts."
Open the "View" drop-down menu. Select "All Contacts."
Open the "Tools" drop-down menu. Select "Import."
Click "Others."
Follow the on-screen instructions to import your address book from another email account into your Yahoo mail account.
Import Address Book Using TrueSwitch Tool

Go to the Esaya TrueSwitch secure transfer Web page. Check the box next to the "Terms of Service" statement.

Click "Begin."
Follow the on-screen instructions to transfer your address book from one email account to another.

The TrueSwitch tool supports transfer from and to Windows Live / Hotmail, AOL / AIM, Yahoo mail, GMX, Verizon, Comcast, ATT, Charter, Time Warner, Cablevision, Cox, CompuServe, Earthlink, Juno, and PeoplePC, among other email accounts.

Top 13 Free Email Services

If you are looking for a free email service, you can be picky.
Your chosen free email service will reward you with plenty of storage, effective spam filtering, a fast and productive interface, desktop email program as well as mobile access, and more. Find the top 13 free email services reviewed here.

Gmail is the Google approach to email and chat. Practically unlimited free online storage allows you to collect all your messages, and Gmail's simple but very smart interface lets you find them precisely and see them in context without effort. POP and powerful IMAP access bring Gmail to any email program or device.
Gmail puts contextual advertising next to the emails you read.

Zoho Mail is a solid email service with ample storage, POP and IMAP access, some integration with instant messaging and online office suites.
Aimed at professional users, Zoho Mail could be even more helpful organizing mail, identifying key messages and contacts, and sending oft-used replies.

AIM Mail, AOL's free web-based email service, shines with unlimited online storage, very good spam protection and a rich, easy to use interface.
Unfortunately, AIM Mail lacks a bit in productivity (no labels, smart folders and message threading), but makes up for some of that with very functional IMAP (as well as POP) access.

iCloud Mail is a free email service from Apple with ample storage, IMAP access and an elegantly functional web application.
That interface at icloud.com does not offer labels or other more advanced tools for productivity and for organizing mail, though, and does not support accessing other email accounts. POP access to iCloud Mail is missing, too.

Outlook.com serves free email with practically unlimited storage accessible on the web with a rich and helpful interface or using POP and Exchange ActiveSync in email programs on desktop and mobile device.
Unfortunately, IMAP access is not part of the mix, and Outlook.com could offer more help with composing in addition to organizing mail

Windows Live Hotmail is a free email service that gives you unlimited storage, fast search, solid security, POP access and an interface easy as a desktop email program.
When it comes to organizing mail, Windows Live Hotmail includes many a helpful shortcut and automation. It's a pity IMAP access to all online folders is missing.

Yahoo! Mail is your ubiquitous email program on the web, Windows 8 and mobile devices with unlimited storage, SMS texting, social networking and instant messaging to boot.
While Yahoo! Mail is generally a joy to use, free-form labeling and smart folders would be nice, and the spam filter could catch junk even more effectively.

Mail.com and GMX Mail are reliable email services filtered well of spam and viruses whose unlimited online storage you can use with a rich web interface and mobile apps. POP and iMAP access are available as a paid add-on.
More and smarter ways to organize mail could be nice.

Shortmail emphasizes easy, fast and effective communication with an email service limited, essentially, to 500 characters per message.
Longer emails can be forwarded, and Shortmail offers simple but effective tools to organize and find mail. Still, hassling senders the way Shortmail does is not without peril, and you may wish for better productivity tools.

BigString.com is a free 2 GB email service that includes rich secure and certified mail services and lets you password-protect, expire or edit sent messages, for example.
Unfortunately, BigString.com is not equally well equipped for handling incoming mail and lacks organizing tools.

Inbox.com not only gives you 5 GB to store your mail online but also a highly polished, fast and functional way to access it via either the web (including speedy search, free-form labels and reading mail by conversation) or through POP in your email program.
Unfortunately, IMAP access is not supported by Inbox.com, and its tools for organizing mail could be improved with smart or self-teaching folders.

Facebook Messages combines emails with everybody, conversations with Facebook friends and SMS texts in a single, simple place organized by the people with whom you communicate.
Facebook Messages's chasteness works well for a limited amount of personal mail, texts and messages, but to handle all your mail, Facebook Messages could do well with more robust tools for managing emails and contacts.

My Way Mail is a clean, fast and fun (though not particularly advanced) free email service.
It lacks secure messaging and other advanced, non-essential features, though.

Gmail will not work with ipad

If you can not get Gmail to work with mail on your iPad there are a couple alternative options.

You can open Safari and navigate to www.gmail.com and use the web interface. It's very useful and contains all the functionality of Gmail in the browser.

The second option would be to install the Gmail app which is available from the app store. This is the official Gmail app from Google.

I would also encourage you to keep trying to add gmail to the mail app by visiting "Settings" on the iPad and then selecting Mail, Contacts... and then adding the account from there. The option to add a Gmail account is listed their. If you continue to have problems please double check that your email address and password are indeed correct.

Do you know a free software to backup locally my Gmail account?

Step 1. Go to the Gmail web interface and click the Settings link at the top right corner of the page. Look for the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" tab and click the link.
Step 2. Now you need to enable either POP or IMAP. For most people, POP will work just fine and it's the simpler of the two. Just select the "Enable POP for all mail" option. You'll also notice that you can control what Gmail does when your desktop client connects under the "When messages are accessed with POP" setting. Choose "keep Gmail's copy in the Inbox" since we're just using POP for backup purposes.
Step 3. Now startup Thunderbird, enter your username (the bit before @gmail.com in your e-mail address) and Google password. Thunderbird will begin downloading your e-mail, creating a local backup. There's no need to mess with Thunderbird's settings or since you're just doing this for backup purposes.
