Yes, Canon DSLRs are very sensitive to some NON-Canon lenses.
If firmware inside the camera detects foreign lens, it locks-up the camera.
Basically, Canon wants you to buy only Canon lenses.

Busy and or Error 01

For error message 01 the manual says: Communications between the camera and lens is faulty. Clean lens contacts.
Solve: Clean the electrical contacts on the camera and lens and use a Canon lens.
SO if you are using a different lens or a non Canon lens this could be what is wrong.

If you never changed a lens, it still can be that something went wrong in the communication between the camera and lens. Just careful remove the lens and with a dry and lint free cloth, clean all contacts on the lens and in the camera. While working on the lens, close the camera with the camera cap, or put the camera face down.
Don't use anything sharp while working on a lens or a camera.

I keep getting Err 01 and no photo is taken what do I do?

ERR 01 is a lens to body communication error. Clean the lens and body contacts (put a small amount of alcohol on a Q-tip - do not use rubbing alcohol!!!). Try again. If that doesn't work, problem may be in lens or body. Using the flat of your fingernail, push in the contacts on the body inside the mirror box to clean any tarnishing between the contacts the the circuit (they are spring loaded). Try another lens - if the other lens works, then your problem is in the first lens. If it still gives the ERR 01 code then the problem is in the body.

Has the camera been impacted or had water/liquid spillage?

Hi there I have recntly purchased a Canon 15m EF fish eye lense which I have used on a Canon 450d + 350d body. On the 350d I get an error 99 code and on the 450d get a 01 error code. This leads me...

Rob, Error 99 is Canon's catch all error code, yes my first impression would also have been to clean the contacts but something else that is happening is the camera firmware may need to be updated to handle that particular lens. Camera updates are free on the Canon site and actually can solve a lot of hidden processing problems.

That lens isn't really suitable for your 450d as it's an APS-C sensor size with a 1.6 crop focal factor which will give you more like a 24mm focal length.

You may also want to format the memory card and clean your battery terminals both the battery and the contacts in the battery compartment.

Best little cleaning item for cleaning contacts is a pencil eraser (new) lens contacts or battery something about the soft rubber cleaning off the most suborn dirt and electrolysis.

Don't use a "used" eraser obviously it will transfer the dirt to the contacts over removing what you want.

Hope these techniques work they have for me

Hi error 01 on canon 5d mk 1. With brand new 70-200 2.8? Have read there is an issue on portrait shots but I am unable at this stage to be sure if it has only been an issue for landscape horizontal use or...

Error 01 is generally associated with camera unable to communicate with lens. Could be contacts need cleaned; since lens is new contacts on camera are more likely starting point for cleaning. But, common issue is failure of something in the lens, but that seems unlikely as it is new ... but it could happen. You might search for other Canon Error 01 comments/solutions. Failing a solution from that, time to contact SigmaUSA repair to have them inspect/repair under warranty.

I tried using a 800mm lens with a 2x teleconverter on my canon digital rebel every time i press the shutter button i get err code 01 what does this mean

Hey there derf69, the error code "err 01" indicates the need to clean the lens contacts, which in your case you have several. I suggest you completely clean the contacts using a contact cleaning solution which dissappears completely. you can also use a clean eraser to effectively remove any resilient buildups. I suggest you completely disassemble your lens configuration, and rebuild, once all contacts on the lens and camera body have been cleaned. There is also a possibility that you may have an incompatibility problem. If the cleaning does not help, please let me know and provide the exact model name and number of your camera, lens, and converter. Good Luck

reset camera by removing battery completely for about 10 seconds.
otherwise, time for service.
sounds like a processor board issue.
you can use a contact cleaner sparingly, available from frys electronics or any other electronic reseller like radio shack.
