When I start the Cub Cadet LT1042, it will slow like something is catching on every second rotation. I just burned out and replaced one starter because of the hang.
Some of those cadets (like those with the Command 20) have a compression release mechanism on the cam which is intended to make that engine crank easier but disengages once the engine fires up. It's a plastic part and is prone to break, resulting in a lot of strain on the starter motor. Interesting design, bad materials. Sometimes the engine will start anyway but this is not a good idea to operate this way. Pull the valve cover. Look at the motion of the exhaust valve when you turn the engine by hand. It will look similar to the motion of the intake valve if this part is broken. If it's working correctly, you should see the exhaust valve open slightly just after the intake valve closes. I'll attach a video to show what it looks like. Replacing the bad cam is a bit of work but not terrible.
If its a briggs and stratton single cylinder... adjust your valves
if not... we need a model number from the engine because cub cadet doesn't make engines
Here it is
It is a Kohler Engine, Model SV590s
first check your valves and the valve adjustment. then check for a broken compression release. then check for a bent valve... in that order
you have a kohler courage engine... 2 camshafts, crappy compression release.

SOURCE: after adjusting deck 1042 cub cadet still cuttinglow right side
try checking to see if perhaps the blade is bent if not blade maybe the spindle or possibly the bearings are bad on the spindles causing them to not run true, also are all tires inflated properly good luck
SOURCE: my cub cadet mower LT1042 will not start. It acts
Just had the same problem with our LT1042 and it was the fuel shut off soloniod. Could not buy just that piece so we took it off and cut off the piece that went up on the carborator and put it back on. Started right up. Now it back-fires when we shut it off but it runs.
SOURCE: Steering problems on our 2005 Cub Cadet LT 1042
Your looking at a new steering gears at the bottom of the shaft. You can fix it if you have the time. You need to hoist the front end into the air....drop the deck, remove the nut on the steering wheel and everything pulls out the bottom of the machine.
If your not handy....send it to a good repair shop. www.nnyparts.com
SOURCE: I have a Cub Cadet LT 1042 and the steering wheel
This sounds similar to the wheel on the bus....<giggle> Well, what you do is look at each part downstream of the steering wheel. Eventually, you will find one part moves and one does not, and that is the area you need to investigate. Often a sheer pin gets sheered.
