Overload on ADP Back-UPS XS 900 with trivial load

I'm getting the high pitched "Overload" whine and red light, when I only have a PDA plugged into the UPS. I've taken it in to Batteries-Plus to check the batteries, and they test out almost as good as new in Voltage and Amperage.

Any ideas?

Turns out "charger" part of UPS had failed.

Had power failure. UPS now has continuous tone. Replaced the battery but the tone is still there. Powerchute software says overload but nothing is plugged into it.

Its is the small internal fan and yes any small fan of 18-24 volts will work the fan only reaches 24 volts when the unit is under load during power fail operation, most of the time most of the time however with normal 120 input conditions and under medium load the fan is only supplied with about 15 volts. this is because APC is now a typical amarican company tryin to save money for them selvs while supplying thier custermers with **** just replace the fan with sumthing the same or at least ball bearing should eleveate the issiue

Is red light on for overload or for battery?
If on overload, try reducing the load on the UPS. If red light on overload persists buy a new UPS (overload fault hard to repair).

Red light on battery - replace the batteries.

Red light on boost or buck, may mean that the nominal voltage of ups and the limits need to be changed/corrected.

Take the battery out and see if it does the same thing when you turn it on.

when red light on means the ups under battery mode. whether your ups gets mains mode, if not you check the fuse, MOSFET, Relay and make it working. your battery may be weak that is why

Have a APC xs-900 that indicates overload and there is nothing plugged into it. New battery did not help.

change the internal fan its a 18-24V type change it with a ball bearing type and yes a 12 volt will also work, with 120v input fine and under medium load the fan is only supplied with about 15 volts and only reaches 24 volts if the load shoots up or there is a power fail situation

Overload Red button is on even after pressing reset button @ back

Try unplugging some equipment from the UPS. The total load should be less than 865 W. Printers and scanners often are culprits. Some gaming desktop computers can have a power supply that will be too much for this UPS. (I've found that even having the printer on the surge only part of the UPS can be a problem. I have the printer on a separate surge protector.)

Since the overload is new, did you add any equipment to the UPS recently or upgrade components?

If you reduce the load, and the problem continues, the UPS may have a fault in the circuitry. If it is under warranty, contact APC.

I hope this helps.

(I have replaced APC units after 3+ years when they can't properly recharge the battery - with a new battery. The symptoms are 1) getting a overload when a small load is on the UPS. Small load - desk lamp, 13" TV or 2) not keeping the item on when the power goes off.)

Tone alarm goes off and flashes "overload" and on the back "building wireing fault" is lit up

The "Overload" light and alarm is to tell you that the devices connected to the UPS are drawing more current than the UPS can safely provide with battery backup. You should disconnect a few items, and the alarm and overload light will turn off. The "Building wiring fault" light on the back is to tell you that there's no proper ground wire inside the wall outlet that you're using. These two problems are not related to each other.

Have brand new APC 900 UPS and when plugged in, both green & yellow indicator lights flash. Non-stop. Left unit plugged in for 18 hours (off) to charge battery as info sheet suggested, but lights still...

Nope! The internal battery is not plugged-in correctly. Unplug the APC unit and open the access door to the battery (it is not dangerous to do).
Re-seat the two wire clips (red & black) to the battery. The positive post has a red mark on it.
Close it up and charge for a few hours before using.

If the symptoms continue, return unit to store.

Ran for about 15 minutes. Hooked up to one

Ether the unit is overloaded or the internal battery is given out, or the overload circuit has failed there are only 3 problems that it could be. Not to go to much in depth on this unit APC does have a garentee and I trust you will call them and tell them this exact same issue if they find the unit is faulty they will replace it even though it may be out of warrenty if you get them on the phone and explain to them they will help I know a Greg over there.
