SOURCE: USB external hard drive does not show up on OS X desktop
You need to be sure that it is formatted as a FAT32 drive and not as a NTFS. When you are in Vista right click on the drive icon and click on properties. You will see NFTS or FAT32 under file system. Your drive must be FAT32 to be recognized by a Mac. Iomega.com has a FAT32 formatting software that you can download for free on your Vista PC and re-format the drive as a FAT32 drive.

2009 06 30 - I just had a similar problem. The Fantom external drive was working fine, but I had to shut down due to a thunderstorm. When I restarted the PC, the drive was not showing up. WHAT I FOUND: First, I didn't find this solution anywhere - everything seemed to point to a new install (or at least how to reformat and start over.) BUT, I right clicked on Computer, Manage, Disk Management - it still didn't show. On the right, under More Actions, I clicked 'rescan disks'. Now it shows up! And all of my data is right there. Whew!

usualy it means that it has an error, try checking that the cables to the drive are connected properly if there all fine try shutting the usb drive off and turing it back on after 3 min.
you should turn your PC off also and restart it.
if that does not work you need to post more information about your PC and periferal devices.
SOURCE: simpletech 500 GB drive won't work
Open your Simpletech by removing two screws from the back --> you need to remove the label in the back, and pull the I/O card up towards you. The I/O card comes off easily. You need to buy a BYTECC USB 2.0 to IDE/SATA ADAPTER Kit ( you can buy this adapter on line, It ranges from $16 to over $30). Now connect the USB port from the adapter kit to your USB port, and plug in the Adapter kit to a 115 volt power outlet. If the hard drive is not shot, that is, you feel it spinning, you should be able to see the drive, and copy the data from your SimplechTecj drive to your PC.

sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable
just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,
check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems
if this fails to fix the problem
you might have to install a usb 2 or 3 card they are cheap and easy to install you can buy these on Ebay very cheap
hope this helps
