I'm assuming you mean it doesn't appear in Finder. Open up disk utility and it should appear there if you say the MacBook is providing power to the hard drive light. You may have to reformat or reset your Mac if you want it in finder

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). I have a firewire from sony 105 to macbook pro--DOES NOT WORK--adapter i used from Sony mini 7" dvd player -- thought I had it fixed :( old camera out of time....
