Sharp vl e780

When I press the play key all I see is snow. no picture is seen

It is likely a defective rubber product, ie belt or idler tire. Here are some links to a company that still carries VCR parts and supplies. Hope this helps.

I don't understand what you mean, the power on switch is on the body slide it to player, you can play, the other side for camera record there is a lock point at the center of the sliding switch, push the switch press to slide .

clean the video head with a head cleaning cassette, the cassette will play only for three minutes so that rewind the cassette and play 4 to five times .

Sounds like dirty video heads.
Try running an appropriate head cleaning tape. After two or three attempts if there is no improvement it's time to see a tech.

Actually, they do still sell the tapes. I have seen Hi8 video tapes at Walgreens, and on ebay and I have a Sony VL-E600U.

These units are getting old. Sound as though some capacitors are going out. Repair bill could go to around $300. Consider a new camcorder.

Is my camera broke?

sounds like your battery or charger might be defective. I have this camera an when the battery is to low it flashes the screen.
I still use the original charger that came with it to charge the batteries,been thru 4 of those. It seems if they set a while without being charged the go bad.
