While moving, I accidentally dropped my television. It fell no more than 18 inches, but when I plugged it in, everything seems to work except for the video screen. I have it in my mind that a wire may have severed after the drop. Is that possible, or is it more likely that the problem is more involved and a TV repairman (if they even exist anymore) can fix it. I live in River Falls, Wisconsin (54022). Thanks for your help!
It's very common for a dropped TV to have a cracked circuit board as a result. This happens because the case twists and stresses the board, or heavy parts get jolted and break the board in that area. The copper traces of the circuit board get broken or parts break free. Then all kinds of troubles can occur.
Often the damage can be repaired, and just about as often it can't. It depends on the extent of the damage and the size of the traces and parts involved. A service technician could certainly examine the set and try to determine if it's repairable, but this kind of problem is one many shops won't touch. There's too much of a chance of missing something and not making a reliable repair, and no shop wants callbacks. If it's a small enough set you might just want to consider replacing it. Otherwise check your Yellow Pages for a shop in your area.
Sorry I can't give you better news, but I saw lots of gravity victims in my shop days and it was a mixed bag.
