For no apparent reason, we lose audio while watching the TV. To get it back, we have to change the channel and then go back to the one we were. It happens at random, no comun factors for this occurrance.
We have the Sony Bravia KDL-55EX500. We have intermittant sound outages daily. Cable company has been here eight times in last year. Have changed HDMI cables twice at suggestion of Sony, as well as updated software to latest version. We have changed the cable box three times. Sony blames cable company. Cable Company says Sony Bravia has a defect. They even showed me their Bravia in the cable company offices and said it cuts sound where all other sets dont. This is a Sony defect and they are deflecting. Do not buy a Bravia as Sony will not admit defect.
This problem appears to be an issue with numerous Sony Bravia owners of the same model. Although still seeking a soulution, it would appear that our cable provider (Verizon) has replaced all of their components and the Geek Squad from Best Buy where we purchased the unit, points the finger at Verizon. None of our other Fios-equipped TV's exhibit this problem so I am glad we bought the service plan with the TV and will continue to seek a remedy.

I have the same problem. Sony support asked me to update my s/w (which I did not even know I could do) via a flash drive they had me update s/w right onto the back of the TV -
now for the bad news, this did not work - I'm still trying to fix the problem. I just read today a posting on another troubleshooting website to try this ::"you have to bring up the menu on the cable box that allows you to select HDMI as the audio source. I actually found the solution on the Internet, and not from the cable company."
I have the same problem did selecting the HDMI audio source fix the problem?
I have the same audio problem with the Sony KDL - 52W4100 ....
Usualy changing channels will fix it although tonight it did not work ???
I tried shutting off my cable box and that did not work ??
I shut my television off and when it came back on all was fine ....
I tried my audio that goes to my receiver from the cable box when this happened and it was ok ...
Don't know how to go into the ComCast cable box to check it ??
Please e-mail me directly with any help ... [email protected]

same problem, it happens about 20 times a day. TimeWarner has checked my cable connections, hardware, etc and changed my cable box 3 times. TV works fine with Wii and DVD, just with the Cable box, which leads me to believe that there's a compatibility issue with the Bravia Sony TV's and the cable boxes available out there.
Can someone explain to me in step-by-step instructions how to choose the HDMI setting on the cable box? I have an Emerson cable box.
thank you
