Not sure which one the Timing or Serpentine belt broke, car lost steering and over heated now it wont start?

Was driving on freeway first the battery light came on the lights on the dash stopped working then 5 min later I lost power steering it was really hard to turn but I kept going to try and make it home. Made it home it was almost like it knew we were home because soon as I started to try and park it started shaking I heard a sound, car shut off I saw smoke coming from the hood got out and saw fluid coming from under the car now the car wont start at all. Looked under the hood and saw a big black belt all ripped up.

SOURCE: no inside electrical power & no start

It sounds like the ground wires from the battery is missing or bad. Verify that there is a wire going from the negative of the battery to 2 spots,
1. the engine itself, and
2. the Automobile's frame

Both need to be there in order for things to work properly! If it is missing or broken replace it and make sure that the frame and wire is metal to metal with no paint in between them.
Good Luck!

SOURCE: Car won't turn over, has power to dash from ignition

ignition switch. the one in the column where the key goes into. not exactly an easy replacement due to the airbag location as sometimes the mount screrws for the key switch retainer will be between the wheel and the column assembly requiring the wheel to be removed.

SOURCE: Just dropped in a new

Sounds like a bad alternator if the other battery also died suddenly.... make sure all wires are connected correctly to the battery and alternator and if so take alternator off and take it to autozone so they can check if its good..... Also take battery back so they give you another but take it after you take the alternator because sometimes they give you attitude and won't honor warranty because it was a bad alternator top begin with.......

SOURCE: i was driving and all of sudden the serpentein

A broken serpentine belt certainly DOES NOT mean your transmission suffered any kind of damage as the transmission fluid is cooled via the transmission cooler (situated in the front of the radiator or sometimes incorporated within the radiator). The trans sends the fluid via two transmission cooler lines using low pressure generated within the transmission, while the car is running. As for the overheating, it depends how hot the engine actually got. If the engine temp reached extreme temperatures you may have warped the heads which would require having to replace the head gasket and having the heads machined level again. However this may not have happened. First and foremost (before installing the new serpentine belt, WITH THE ENGINE OFF, MANUALLY CHECK WHICH OF THE PULLEYS IS BINDING. IN MY EXPERIENCE IT'S EITHER THE WATER PUMP OR THE AC PULLEY. of course check the power steering, alternator, tensioner and idler pulleys as well (you need not concern yourself with the harmonic balancer as this pulley is attached to the crank shaft and is not the problem. replace the frozen component/s and then install the serpentine REFILL YOUR RADIATOR AND OVERFLOW CONTEINER. At this time drive the car around your neighborhood until it reaches operating temp and the thermostat opens (you can tell because the upper radiator hose will be hot and/or the radiator fan will come on. Note if the temp gauge as risen past the middle and heading for the red zone on the dial. If so, park and shut the engine off and let cool overnight, then add more anti freeze to the overflow bottle (this will rid the engine of air pockets). Repeate the procedure as necessary. If after +doing all of this your car starts to overheat and coolant has leaked from the overflow tank it's a fair bet you will need to replace the head gasket/s after checking the head mating surface for warpage. Hope this has been of some assistance.

The fan belt broke while the car was driving and it starts and switches off as it has no power, what damage can be caused by a broken fan belt on a Opel Astra 160IE

A broken serpentine belt leads to a sudden loss of power assist for the steering system, where the steering wheel all-of-a-sudden becomes very hard to turn. ... A broken serpentine belt stops the water pump from circulating coolant (antifreeze) through the cooling system, and the engine can overheat - anywhere!

My audi a5 wont run it starts and cuts out since i fitted a new serpentine belt

How long does it run? Sure you only changed the serpentine belt? The car would actual even run without the serpentine (or also called accessory belt) since the belt only drives fairly non essential components (AC compressor, alternator, fan, power steering pump. etc).

Driving my 92 525i bmw on freeway when it all broke loose my Power Steering and then all the lights on dash when on. Also the car over heated. What could have happen?

Serpentine belt broke. A serpentine belt drive runs everything: power steering, ac, alternator (electrical power), and the water pump (explains the overheating). I'd bet anything that your belt broke.

It's possible the timing belt has broken. Has it ever been replaced? (This isn't the serpentine belt that you see in front of the engine; the timing belt is located inside the front engine cover where you can't see it.) If that's the problem, make sure that the engine hasn't been damaged before spending big bucks to have the belt replaced. (In some engines, when the timing belt breaks, the pistons can damage the valves. If your car has an engine like that, it may not be worth repairing.)
