not recommended but yes it might just be a loose connection or dry joint, just be carefull there are live capacitors inside which might shock you

It sounds like it is not getting steady DC voltage, that will be the first place to check.

christelledt, When black screen of death rears it's ugly face, the first thing to do is look at the "date of manufacture" on rear of the unit! If unit has lots of "ON" time (300 days/year x 8 hrs/day x years in service) it may need to be replaced or refurbished. 7 to 10 thousand hours is middle to old age in monitor life. If unit performs in same way when connected to different pc then you will trade-in for new or investigate a DIY refurbishment of the units internal ac to dc switch-mode-power-supply/CCFL inverter printed circuit board. unit may need $5 in capacitors replaced to fix it. the capacitor and/or transistor is shot try replacing it... i work for seimens so let me know
