SOURCE: I have a Garmin 396

I recommend either resetting the device or update the software. You can find software downloDepending on which model of Garmin GPS unit you’re using, thefollowing routine can reset the Garmin device to original factoryloaded settings, or bring up the Maintenance Mode with access to SystemInformation and View Diagnostics screen, where users can see variouslogs, and of course, clear all user data (reset to factory defaults) orclear Waypoints.
In order to reset Garmin device or enter into maintenance mode, perform one of the following procedures:
Power off Garmin unit. Press on continuously the uppertop left corner of screen and then power on the unit by pressing onceon the Power button. You should be prompted to clear all user data, orasked if do you really want to start up in maintenance mode. Press“Yes” to reset (warning: all data will be erased and lost,so backup before proceeding) or enter maintenance mode.
Hack above works on Garmin Nuvi 660, 680 series.
Turn off Garmin device. Press down on bottom rightcorner of the touchscreen, and then power on the GPS unit. You shouldbe prompted whether do you really want to erase all user data, or askedif do you really want to start up in maintenance mode. Press“Yes” to reset (warning: all data will be erased and lost,so backup before proceeding) or enter maintenance mode.
Trick above works on Garmin nuvi 200, 250, 360 750, 760 series unit.In fact, there is a video demo by user of Garmin Nuvi 360 on how toperform the hidden reset function.

Note: If entering maintenance mode, it’s also possible to perform master reset by selecting clear user data option.
Once the device has been hard reset, user have to perform the set upprocedure again upon start up. Note that erase user data command onlydelete data in the Garmin unit’s memory that isn’taccessible to the user when the unit is connected to computer. Thecommand does not erase .gpi or .gpx files loaded (if your .gpx filescontain any waypoints then they will automatically be imported intoFavorites), nor will delete any MP3 music, JPG photos or any otherfiles that have been stored on the GPS memory card.
Once the Garmin GPS unit is reseted, remember to place the deviceoutside where there is a clear unobstructed view of the sky for 15– 30 minutes in order for it to requires fix to GPS satellites.
Unfortunately, even if you perform master reset on Garmin GPS unit,it does not reset Garmin Lock security feature, which password-protectmost Garmin electronic devices to deter theft. If you forget the PIN orpassword unlock code to unlock the Garmin unit, the best solution is tobring it to Garmin to get unlocked. “Secure Location” doesnot unlock a locked Garmin unit either as it’s only a temporaryfix as when it’s turn on outside the security location, thedevice is locked again.

Battery went dead on Garmin 396. The unit worked with airplane power in GPS mode but displays "waiting for data" on Nexrad Radar. I have downloaded version 5.30 I should alao mention that...

You indicated that the battery went dead. Does the new battery work correctly? That is, does it show a full charge when you've had it plugged in overnight and disconnect the power? Try plugging it into AC power overnight and verify that the battery is accepting and holding a full charge. If it isn't, then unplug and turn the unit on and allow the battery to run all the way down. Then charge it fully. This resets the charge indicator. You may have to repeat it once. I did this and was able to again show that both my new and my old battery were working o.k. They should show about 8.1 V fully charged.
About the Nexrad problem. In the past I would need to refresh the XM receiver when this happened. XM walked me through it and I have the steps, but the links are no longer working. Maybe it is no longer required since the XM link now jumps to SiriusXM. I've not needed to refresh for a couple of years and I suspect they eliminated that requirement.
To verify that the XM antenna is connected: Turn unit off. Connect the XM receiver. Simultaneously press "on" and "enter" keys- hold both until data screen appears, which takes about 5 seconds. Second line from bottom indicates if it is seeing the XM receiver. This helps isolate where the problem is- i.e. if you have a faulty receiver, bad connection or a software problem. The only contact I know of now is Garmin 800-800-1020. They can give you the XM contact if the problem is on that side of the unit. There is other data here which may be of interest to you on this page. Turn unit off to close this window.
If you need your XM radio ID, turn 396 on. Press menu, menu, scroll to XM, then right to Info. XM Receiver ID is there. Write it down in case you talk to XM or they give you a way to refresh. There are other menus you can get into but if they show a problem I don't know the solution other than contacting Garmin and I don't have my XM receiver home so can't verify the steps.

Garmin will not boot up - comes on and then goes off immediately - what could be the problem

Sounds like the battery is discharged. It will probably have to be connected via USB cable to your computer overnight before it will be able to be charged by your car adapter again.

If that fails, contact Garmin Customer Support below:

I have a new garmin nuvi with bluetooth. I have

When starting the two devices to work with each other for the first time, you'll need to make the bluetooth phone "discoverable" There should be a menu item on your phone pertaining to the bluetooth connection that will allow you to do this.

Get the nuvi to the point where it is almost ready to link with the phone, then put the phone in the mode to make it discoverable. Put the nuvi into the mode where it "pairs" with a bluetooth device. Once the pairing is done, you shouldn't have to do this again, unless you delete the phone profile from the nuvi.

If you have problems, you can speak with a Garmin representative to determine if your phone is supported or if an update to your nuvi is needed. They can be reached below:

Discover mode is usually enabled for 30 to 60 seconds before it automatically exits this mode. Your phone may be different.

Nuvi 780 does not get past "loading maps". I have rebooted to no avail. I have let my MSN subscription expire. Does the entire GPS system depend on MSN?

The MSDN Traffic receiver does not need to be active to display maps. it is only needed for traffic reports, news, stocks, gas prices, Web Favorites, etc.

You may need to reload the maps into your GPS, unfortunately garmin stopped including the DVD in the box - BUT Garmin will send a DVD disk for free - just for asking. You will need your coupon codes however, to unlock the map.

I suggest you telephone Garmin and speak with a Customer Support Rep. to get a full explanation of what they can do for you.
