Could be a bundle of reasons, you might wanna check out the guide from Dig My Ride for an informative article that covers the common culprits for this problem. You should check your battery and alternator. A broken alternator will cause your battery to die. A weak or dead battery will cause problems when starting your car.

SOURCE: volkswagen transporter 2 5 tdi white smoke

Hi, Luke

White smoke from the exhaust is typically oil burning, caused by, worn valve seal(s) - worn or broken piston ring(s) or a broken head gasket, thus allowing excessive oil in to the combustion chamber, but then most auto shops already know this and would require major engine dis-assembly to truly diagnose this issue.

Hard starting could be oil fouled spark plugs, a result of the same issue.

As a side note: I would take a friend who is somewhat mechanically inclined with you to "your workshop" to engage the person(s) to get an in-depth explanation as to how they checked your piston.

Do not purchase a fuel pump or that repair on an assumption, be sure

One of the tell tale signs of a fuel related issue is black smoke...

Takes along time to get gas to the engine to start

Sounds like your fuel pump is going out. Perform a fuel pressure test make sure it is holding fuel pressure

2004 gmc sonoma why does it take 2-3 times cranking before it starts and only does it sometimes?

install pressure gauge and watch when key is turned off to see if pressure drops to zero if so bad drain back valve in fuel pump replace it or deal with it or could be cheap aftermarket pump and has hard time building unnecessary pressure to open poppet valves between before fuel injectors

My 1999 Ford explorer has periodic no start issues.

you need to check the wiring on the starter and the timing are the timing belt and the crank sensor give these websites a try www.alldatadiy.com and www.autozone.com wish you the best of luck Michigan Man.

I can start the car but it takes sometime 3 to 4 times to get it started? I wasnt sure if its the spark plugs that need to be changed or what it is?

More than likely it is the fuel pump going out and it takes a few tries to prime the fuel system, I would perform a fuel pressure test when its cold and has been sitting and see if it takes along time to build pressure..

Car start but does not take

Hi,

Two possibilities:
1. air bubbles along the fuel line or in the injector/pump;
2. clogged fuel filter/line.

Possibility #1 would require removal of air by bleeding or priming while #2 would require filter replacement or cleaning the line.

In some instances, it could be the fuel pump has some debris/dirt in the intake, impeller or discharge.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
