That's funny I just had the same problem and almost went crazy. Reconnect the GPS to your computer, restart your TomTom home software, and reinstall Tom Tom home to your GPS. If it says this application already exists, then press ok to overwrite it. Something must have happened when u were writing to the SD card the first time that's why u have a frozen SD card and it is telling u to take it out. I just fixed mine this way.

When turn On can get the screen showing the GPS connected to Computer when not connected ,On Battery only, get red cross flashing

If your TomTom shows a red cross, it means the device is not able to load the software to be able to operate. Some devices have this software on a SD-card, some have it stored on an internal memory.
If there was a SD-card in your TomTom, I would suggest to put it back. If there is a empty SD-slot on your device, it could be you lost your SD-card, but some TomTom devices have an internal memory AND a SD-slot for memory extension, so if you have an empty cardslot it doesn't necessarily mean there has to be a card in it.

When you never saw a SD-card, probably some data went corrupt on the internal memory. When you have a SD-card, probably some data got corrupted on the SD-card.

To repair the software, you need to connect your GPS to your PC or Mac with a USB cable.
You also need the program TomTom HOME. You can download it for free on the TomTom website.
With TomTom HOME you can update the operating system of your device for free (map updates are nor free).

Try updating, and see if your device works again.

If this doesn't work, post it here.

Hi,

Go to TomTom Home reconnect and then go to device on the tool bar. Select disconnect device and this should free up your device and take the red X off.

My tomtom fell on the floor and i get aflashing red and white cross. How do i correct this and get my device working again?

Internal memory was damaged when dropped.. OR the SD card if it has one. Replace the sd card and copy data over from back up

Tomtom Go 500 won't see memory card - big red cross over memory card on screen. Have tried reflowing solder joints on card slot. Have tried cleaning card slot.

Have you tried reformatting your memory card? Does your computer recognize your card if you plug in the card directly to your computer? You can also try a different memory card if the other solution doesn't work. REFORMATTING WILL ERASE THE CONTENTS OF CARD JUST SO YOU KNOW!

Red cross help

Try taking the memory card out and giving the contacts a quick clean with a lint free cloth

When I turn on there is only a cross over the SD card.

This problem is due to the memory card not containing the TomTom application or map. To update the application onto the memory card, Connect the device to your computer. Open the TomTom Home application. Click on 'Update My Device'. This should then install the application onto the SD card. Alternativly, you could perform all the steps above without the SD card in the device, this will install the application onto the internal memory. Note: you may also need to install your maps, voices, etc after you updat.

Before all, make a backup of device thrugh explorer or similar.

On the same link;
http://www.tomtom.com/support/index.php?Language=1&query=red+cross&FID=1898

longer down on the page, you will find:

What if the device still doesn't start?

If your device still only shows a cross after you turn it on, try formatting the internal memory or memory card of your device.
Please follow instructions carefully...
