I think there is no SATA ports on its mother board. So SATA Hard disks cannot be used on this system.

Without any dobt you can use PATA (the one that we used to see everywhere) can be used. There is no question of compatibility; any size 80,or 160 GB or even more can be used.

I turn on the Gateway and the words Gateway come on screen, then it goes black. The keyboard is on then off then comes on again, Screen remains black.

You have a problem with the operating system. It has crashed. You will need to reinstall the operating system in your computer. Before you do that you need to back up your file in your hard drive. To do that you need a 2nd computer get a hard-drive closure external take out the hard drive of your gateway. and plug it in to the external closure and plug it in the computer and explorer and move the files you need to the other computer. After that put the hard drive back into the gate

Your computer came with a recovery disc. Use that to reinstall your computer and software. That will help your problem. Update your computer to make sure it doesn't fail again.

Can i use my ibm hard drive in a gateway pc

Laptop hard drives are compatible to any laptops as long as the connectors are the same. ATA to ATA or SATA to SATA.

If your IBM hard drive is a laptop hard drive, it will not be compatible with a desktop. Desktop hard drives are 3.5 inches in size while notebooks or laptop hard drives come in 2.5 inches.

Hope this helps.

Specs for a Hard Drive

Anything you have should fit in there, you will have to upgrade the operating system, but the hard drive shouldn't be a problem so long as the computer is new enough to auto configure the hard drive.

I recently bought a new hard drive to update the "tired out" model in my gateway model gt5674. i was told that i needed a SAS compatable motherboard to get this new hard drive installed. is there any...

Take the disk-drive back to the computer-store,
along with your computer, and exchange the new disk-drive for one that is compatible with your computer. Within 15 seconds of viewing the "inside" of your Gateway, they should be able to identify the correct model of disk-drive that will be compatible with your current motherboard.

Or, the more-expensive option: buy a PCI add-in card to add a 'SAS-compatible' interface (although I've never heard of such an interface!!!!) to your computer.

How do you transfer hard drive from old comp. to new?

For just the data, get an ide to usb converter and connect it to the new computer, and just drag and drop.
You cant move an entire hard drive to a new computer because of driver issues, but you can use windows built in files and settings transfer utility.
