Won't start, intermittently. Turn key, and dash goes blank. If you lightly tap on starter w/ hammer, it will kick over, (runs a bit rough after that). Replaced starter and still does same thing. Horn won't sound from steering wheel (another intermittent problem now happening at same time) but sounds if you use the key fob "panic button". Mechanic is stumped.

Ignition relay or fuse could be the problem. When you turn the key to start do you hear a fuel pump kicking on and or do you have spark when you hot wire the starter (I know it's hard to check while trying to start it)? You can email me back and I might be able to pinpoint it more.

If it is not turning over, or the starter is not turning the engine over, you either have a bad battery or a faulty starter/solenoid. AutoZone and Advance Auto Parts will check your battery for free and let you know if it is the problem. They will also check your starter if you pull it out first.

Most common is fuel pump failure. Have the fuel pressure checked, it needs to be about 60 psi. If no problem there, check for spark coming out of the coil. Coils on these vehicles do fail on occasion. Also there is an ignition module mounted on an aluminum plate on the coil bracket. These will fail on occasion as well.

Check the dash once you turn the key to the run position the passlock runs a security check using a set resistance value through the chip in the key. If the security light begins to flash the reading it received was incorrect or it didn't get a reading at all. You can try reseting the value it is looking for by turning the key to start then releasing it. After 10 minutes turn it off then cycle it start again leaving it in on for 10 minutes then back to off then one more time. After the third cycle has completed for a total of 30 minutes. You should be able to turn the key on and start the vehicle. If the light continues to flash their is a problem with the chip in the key or the connections within the ignition its self. Both are common but a Pass Lock Relearn as described above will usually adapt to the poor connection values. Hope this helps.
