An old kelvanator freezes in the refrigerator compartment

A 60's Kelvanator with a top freezer but has a coil in the lower refrigerator compartment which is icing up with the Tstat set at minimum. Freezer and refrigerator compartments both running about 43F. Freezer doesn't freeze and refrigerator is too cold! Can you help? JS

This 60's refrigerator has no defrost timer or arrangement. At two points in its life the refrigerant was adjusted and I am not sure the quantity is correct anymore. Couldn't excess refrigerant carry over into the coil in the refrigerator and cause it to ice up? I repeat, freezer and refrigerator are running same temp 41-42F Tstat is set at minimum.

I think we're getting there. I have engineered and tested automotive systems a while back. My freezer compartment doesn't freeze T=41-42F. In the refrigerator compartment below is a coil or plate which is ice and frost covered at the upper left corner just below the freezer compartment. Probably 20% frosted over. The refrigerator temp is also 41-42F with the Tstat set at the minimum to run the compressor. What high side and low side pressures should I look for with F-12, I assume.

For an R-12 System, and assuming you have R-12 guages, I would tap into the low side (the bigger of the two lines coming out of the compressor), I use bullet piercing valve, pt# bpv-31, and looking at the outside numbers, your pressure while the compressor running should be around 6-10 on the blue side. If when tapped in low side the pressure shoots up high then you've got a restriction, if it plummets in the green to 20 or below, you've got a bad leak, if in the green around 10, you can get away with adding freon. Normally in most situations if you are getting ice forming on the coils, and I mean ice, not frost, on either coil, be it freezer or fridge chances are you have a refrigerant problem. A good indication of this would be to expose the coils and see if the ice is localized, or more so concentrated in one portion of the coils, i.e. upper right corner, etc. Going further into the problem, the two things that would cause this is (1) a restriction in the line, (2) low pressure in the lines which is because of a leak or weak compressor. To really diagnose this problem accurately you need a set of refrigerant gauges and tap into the low side line of the sealed system.

SOURCE: Freezer works, frig does not. Also ice build up in freezer coil

I just worked on a FF801W which is supposed to be very similar. The defrost heater in mine was of the glass tube type and located under the evaporator. There was a bimetal thermostat clipped to the top of the evaporator and a thermal fuse (sealed in a clear plastic tube) nearby. The connections were behind a little plastic cover (2 screws) in the back wall just above the evaporator.

Mine was iced up like yours and I had to defrost it with a hair dryer. All the defrosting parts in the freezer compartment turned out to work so I now suspect the defrost timer (down by the compressor). I've marked it and I'm waiting to see if it's turning.

I have a top freezer/bottom refrigerator-6months old-no icemaker hooked up. There is water dripping continuously into the refrigerator compartment-some of it freezes and the rest accumulates in the...

Hello,

That water is from the melting frost of the automatic defrost cycle. Their is drain in the freezer behind the back wall under the evaperator coil that is blocked, so instead of defrost water draining it's pooling in the freezer or in some case espically on models with the freezer on the top,the water is leaking from the freezer vents into the fresh food compartment.
The way to clear the drain is remove back plate and remove all ice build up and GENTLY make a small hole in drain through then totally flush w/warm water.
The exact location of drain is under the coil behind back freezer plate in the center

Good luck

I hope this helps

My Estate by Whirlpool freezer coils freeze up and both the freezer and lower compartments won't stay cold. I can manually thaw the freezer and it works ok for a few days then does it again

You have a problem with the automatic defrost cycle, it is typically the defrost control, which is located in the compartment next to the thermostat or cold control. If you send me your entire model number from the tag on the inside I can get you the part number needed.

Fruits & Veggies are freezing in both lower frig compartments

Good day,
This problem appears in spades this time of year, every year.
The problem becomes more severe when the temperatures in the house cools down and is made even worse if the usage of the machine becomes lighter.

It occurs when the machine is off, not on.
There is an open vent, near the bottom, between the freezer compartment and the fresh food compartment. This opening or vent is necessary when the machine is running, so that the air pumped into the top of the fresh food section, can return to the freezer compartment. This is by design.
Now,
When the machine is off, the zero degree air from the freezer compartment. can drift into the fresh food compartmnet and drop the temps near the bottom to below freezing.
Off time increases substantialy at this time of year.
Some have even recommended turning the controls colder to offset the problem, but I've no proof it works well, or even a little.
SXS and top freezer models experience it more than bottom freezer models.

Fridge compartment is freezing food/milk etc

Sir, To solve this problem, you must open the compressor area at the back bottom of the refrigerator and chek the temperature of the pressure line. If the temperature is between 55celcius to 60 than its ok. Or else you need to change the refrigerant. I suggest you to contact the service authority.

Thanks for contacting Fixya.

Fridgidare/Electrolux top freezer not freezing fan stays on.

Look for ice buildup on the back wall of the freezer.
If ice is there you have a defrost parts issue.
If not, check the compressor to make sure it is running.

Top mounted freezer on refrigerator not working

Move the refrigerator to a room that is at least 50 degrees F.

Temps on most refrigerators are regulated by the fresh foods temp. If your garage is let's say 35 degrees, the fresh foods temp will most likely never raise enough to turn the refrigerator on. With the refrigerator never running, the freezer compartment will warm to 35 degrees, resulting in everything melting. Even if garage is a bit warmer, say 45, the refrig will not run long enough for the freezer to maintain a low enough temperture. If the garage temp falls to below freezing, say 20 degrees, the food in the fresh foods compartment will freeze. (outdoor beverage dispensers have internal heaters to prevent product from freezing !) Please don't rate this if not a Fix-Ya for you, as anything else lowers my score.

Samsung fridge RS2545SH every 7 days freezes fridge coil.

Hey how yo doing? on most refriderator there are two important parts to keeping freezer from freezing over, they are the bimetal thermostat and ice pipe heater. The bimetal therostat is a preset thermostat that ranges from 54degrees farenheit to about 60, when the coils (inside the freezer compartment behind the back panel) reach the preset temp. it closes a circuit and send electricity to the ice pipe heater, to warm the freezer coils preventing from freezing over. if any one of those components fail, your freezer will continue to freeze solid until there is no more space for ice to build on coils decreasing air flow from the evaporator fan blowing air into your fridge. To test you will minor knowledge on using a multimeter.(REMEBER TO UNPLUG REFRIDGERATOR BEFORE SERVICING, IF YOU UNCOMFORTABLE WORKING ON APPLIANCE PLEASE CONTACT A PROFFESIONAL REPAIR SERVICE..) If you'd like to continue please respond.
GOOD LUCK, WORK SAFELY..
