We want to upgrade our hp compaq 6720s, at the moment it has it's standard 1GB of RAM, to upgrade do we have to remove the original 1GB of RAM first then replace with upgrade of RAM.
We find that when using a few programs at once it seem's to get a little slow, for instance at the moment we are running two email programs and one ebay program and now on this site FixYa, the RAM graph is at 83%, and loading pages seems to be taking longer, When refreshing a new page (say ebay) the CPU graph hits 100%.
Some advice would be great...

Re: RAM UPGRADE FOR HP COMPAQ 6720s
The speed of your computer is determined by the memory capacity, the hdd storage capacity (that means that if the hard drive is full of data your computer becomes low - not about the size of your hard drive) and your processor speed.
In your case I recommend:
1) A good cleaning, 2) Be sure that your computer is not virus or spyware infected 3) Get rid of those programs that you are not using. 4) Disable the programs that are running on the background
Sure after that your computer will become faster. Your memory capacity is good enough to your normal duties (above described)

try adding one ram stick upgrade at a time, while leaving one original in the system till it boots and recognises the increase. repeat until finished adding all the new ram. if these measures dont work, its possible you have purchased ram that is not matching to the upgradable standards of your board. its important when adding ram to insure you match the ram speed with your replacements upgrade.
I have checked the Compaq Presario CQ60-215DX Specification It Originally has 2GB Memory and supports upto 4GB RAM max. If you intend to upgrade the RAM, you can buy additional RAM and put them in you system. Here is the HP Guide to Replace RAM and How to Upgrade RAM Guide Compaq Presario CQ60-215DX has two RAM slots for DDR-2 (533 or 667) Memory Modules. First you have to check that the RAM slot is available for additional RAM. I believe that it has two modules of 1GB each in both slots. So, you have to get two modules of RAM 2GB each to upgrade to 4GB (or one 2GB RAM module to upgrade to 3GB). Hence, it is recommended that you get 2GB replacement module for each 1GB module you have on you system from local laptop repair/ service center, which would be cost effective as existing 1GB RAM Modules would be useless for you upon upgrade.
Let me know if any further clarification/ assistance is required.

Firstly, you have to know that you can upgrade RAM as Double or Half of your pre-installed RAM. For example, like your pre-installed RAM is 256 MB, you can only upgrade RAM of capacity 128 MB or 512 MB.
Secondly, check your previous installed RAM's speed that is shown in Ghz. You can only upgrade RAM to its similar speed, otherwise you get slow performance of PC.
Ok, so you just got more Hard disk space, or a new bigger Hard disk. Of course you need t upgrade the Ram memory. This computer supports Ram memory up to 1 Gb with a max frequency of 266Mhz. You probably have 256Mb or 512Mb of Ram Memory. You can go to any computer store and get it upgraded. It shouldn't be expensive. But don't forget :
Use this tyoe of RAM: DDR SDRAM (266 MHz), Upgradeable to 1GB
By the way, even after the upgrade, I advise you to run a Defrag of your Hard Disk and clean all your temp files.
There is a free and easy software to clean all temp and internet temp files: Ccleaner.
vista needs 40mb to install ...no matter how much mem you install vista is slow compared to xp or xp pro which configuered right can run at lightening speeds.
to upgrade mem ...
you either have 2 512mem cards or 1 1024 card ...if you have 1 1024 card add another if you have 2 512 replace with 2 1024.
you can buy mem cards in any pc shop.
