My Western Digital Caviar WD1600BB 160 GB hard drive in my dvd recorder is making a clicking sound, how do I test to see if it is the heads that are faulty or the circuit board?

Hi,
Welcome to Fixya. If you are hearing a loud ticking or high pitch noise on the hard drive it means that the hard drive will be defective anytime soon. If you can take out the hard drive and backup the files on you computer and replace the hard drive on the computer. Loud noise can be caused by a bad spindle or the hard drive or the hard drive is frying inside the dvd recorder.
If you have questions please let me know. Thanks

Windows7 wont read wd1600 caviar as a external drive ???

Did you install the western digital drive softare? There should have been a disk with the drive, which you run when you have installed the drive. It tells the computer there is a new hdd in town. If you don't have the disk, google Western Digital, find their website, and search for HDD driver software, with the model number of your drive. You should be able to download the drivers to your computer, and install them that way.

My wd1600bb-00dwa0 hard drive I believe died as I got a MEGATREND WINDOW which stated that the hard disc was bad. It would have to be bad, right? I couldn't get anything else to come up on my monitor....

yes u can go higher with GB you just have to be sure that the rpm's match youll see on the label it will tell you either 5400.3 or 5400.6 or 7200rpm. be sure also the dimensions are the same if you have a 2.5" get a 2.5" a 3.5" won't fit

Wd hdd 80 gb sata clicking problem not detect

The moveable read/write "head" inside the disk-drive (like the needle and arm on a vinyl record player) is making the "clicking".

It's a sign that the disk-drive is "dead".

Search online for a professional "data recovery service" -- for a large fee, they can repair the disk-drive, just long enough to copy your files onto a new disk-drive.

My WD2500JB stopped working. Makes a click-click-click sound.

Your hard drive is bad. If you are hearing clicking reptitiously it is you head not moving. Sorry about the bad news.

Can wd 1600bb be replaced with alternative

Generally your hard drive CAN be replaced with almost any other, just make sure you get the same type, as in IDE or SATA drive for a replacement.

Installing SATA WD 160 GB Hard Drive

You may not have a SATA system - Western Digital has the other type of hard disk drive available.
