3speed gears on my bicyle keeps slipping - Cycling

  • Anonymous Sep 02, 2011

Is it the rear gearset, or "Freewheel"? if so, this means that it will need to be replaced. They are not serviceable parts. Some dealers are willing to help you if you don't want to buy a new one, with giving you an old one if they have one. This is all dependant on the age of the bike.

You don't identify the brand but you can probably find your own answer for adjustment by web searching for "3-speed gears slipping" until you find YOUR type.

Wouldn't that have been faster than posting here?

What would cause my 26 inch avalon bicyle to make a clunking sound when shifting from low to high gear? And how do I fix it?

Are you going 1 gear at a time or trying to go from first to high. On some bikes you have to allow the chain go from one gear to the nest and up the line or it will make a noise.

I have a 1995 Suzuki Sidekick jx it will not drive forward but will drive in reverse. I put oil in car and the transmisson fluid is full what could be the problem

95 jx
but is it 3speed or 4 speeds.
if 3speed, the lever not really going to Drive?
if that does happen the trans is bad.
if 4sp, (see od light see od switch and P/N switch that is 4speed
as is the 2 on gears, if 4speed it has a TCM brain
the tranny brain, and we can scan, it , or more accurately a jumper
clip , and the TCM flashes out codes
is the the OD lamp flashing, yes that is the TCM begging for help.

next time post trans gear counts, as we can not guess that ever
nor engine. 95 had 2 engine choices.

the 3speed also has a filter in the pan area (above)
if packed in junk,, as they all do. it will only shift hot. or not at all.
its called a full flush, with filter. not a lame drain and fill.

Wont shift till 4000 rpm

must be a slush pump automatic.

how many doors on car

what engine/? 8v or 16v.

the 2door has a 3speed AT.

the 4door has the 4speed.

both those can slip , is the tranny slipping??????

if not, then its SHIFTING late (fact)

ok both 3/4 speed has kick down cable and if stuck in the pulled out

position, will shift late, (it thinks you are passing all the time)

The 4speed , is the OD lamp stuck on?

the 3speed has more fail pathes here.

bad Vacuum modulator, bad inside, leaking, causeing late shifts.

bad Governor, or its screens packed with crap. or just bad.

the Gov. senses the cars speed, tail shaft RPM is how it does this.

ever do a full transmission service. if not why not.

seems it ready ,no?

No power when taking off in first gear

Clean the throttle body first. Then pull the shifter down to first and shift manually. Se if it shifts from first to second. you might be starting off in second.

1991 1.8L sidekick transmission slipping

wrong engines. the 1991 never had a 1.8L until 1996.
fact. and dont matter. (unless year is wrong)
1991 answers ONLY!
no matter, the 1991 in the 2 door version (is it?) had a 3speed
transmission, used back in 1970s,, a pure mech. design.
the 4 doors have 4speed that is electronically shifted.

the 3L30 is a relic, and can slip.
id say its bad.
the FSM covers this.
1: both stall tests fail. (sure)
2: you crossfingers for new filter and full flush and fails. sure.
3: you check pump pressure and?????

the on car (in-car) checks are in the FSM.
nice page here.

I have a 1999 dodge 1500 2wd truck w/a 5.9 engine and a 3speed automatic w/OD. The tranny does not want to shift gears on its own, until hits about 2500rpm. Slips back& forth between 1st & 2nd when...

yes sounds like the one of your transmission shift solenoids is out or going out on you check them out see if can see if wires loose or if they are faulty try get a diagram see if can find out which solenoid controls 1 and 2 gear theres 4 solenoids total i believe but this is your problem

Trans. problem

3speed or 4 speed? does it slip or just not shift. Might be old seals or a bad governor. Try using lubegard trans additive. Try that for a week if it doesn't work, replace the governor valve.
