I have a Yamaha RX-A800. When setting up, it went into circuit protect mode after three consecutive attempts to turn the unit on (pretty sure now that I have a short in my speakers which was the cause) I sent the unit to the factory repair center after contacting Yamaha regarding the reset procedure. They would only say that I had to send to factory for reset. The factory called me upon reciept of my unit and said it had been damaged (dented about 1/4 inch in the rear at component connectors) They gave the unit back to UPS without reseting or attempting repair and it was returned to me. I would like to try to reset the circuit myself to see if there is any damage as a result of the shipping damage. Is there a reset procedure that involves pressing a series of controls? Thanks, Jeff

The Problem with this solution is that it requires the unit to be powered on, which is the purpose of me posting in the first place. I need the procedure to power my unit back on.

Just so you understand, I am not trying to reset my unit to the factory settings, I am trying to power up the receiver due to it going into a self protect mode to prevent damage to the unit from shorts. The procedure you first described is the procedure to reset the defaults, not the circuit protection. My unit will not power up at all (no display at all, even following the procedure you described, which i tried before shipping it to the factory and the resulting damage. This is normal according to Yamaha but they say it must be reset by factory technicians but I am searching for a way to reset my self to determine if the unit has any additional problems due to the damage it received during shipping to the factory. I do not want to waste money shipping back to factory for them to reset the circuitry only to be told that it is ruined due the shipping damage.
    Thanks for your help

The service center did not attempt to reset the unit because there was obvious damage to the unit during shipment to them. While there may be a problem with the parts due to the damage caused during shipment, there is little chance that the unit was damaged due to the short with the speakers. In the owners manual and confirmed with communication with Yamaha, the unit will go into a protection mode after the third consecutive attempt to power on the unit. This is exactly what it did which leads me to believe that there is probably no damage to the unit other than perhaps a fuse to be replaced. Whatever the solution is, that is what I need to know.
    Thanks

Sir in order to power up your unit you have to check the parts inside because when you accidentally short the speaker connection it has already a defective parts. that's why yamaha service center did not reset the unit because it has a problem with the parts.

Sir if there is no light indicator that is flashing or steady light, possible that the fuse is blown of,try to remove the cover of your unit just follow the screw at the both side of the cover and at the back is the edge of the cover. If you remove the cover try to trace the ac cord it will direct you to the fuse. If you see the fuse try to observe the filament if only broken you can replace it but if the fuse is totally burned and you cant see the filament it indicates the theres is a shorted parts especially the power IC or transistor of your unit.

Hi,
To reset the AVR to factory reset do the following

1.Press the "Master On/Off" (standby button) button on the receiver's front panel to turn it off.

2. Press the "Straight/Effect" button and hold it down 3. Press the "Master On/Off" button while holding the "Straight/Effect" button. The "Advanced Menu" will appear on the panel's display. Release the buttons.

4. Rotate the "Program Selector" knob to the right until you see "Initialize Cancel" on the display

5. Press the "Straight/Effect" button repeatedly until "Initialize All" appears on the display.

6. Press the "Master On/Off" button to turn the power off.

7. Press the "Master On/Off" button to turn the power back on. The receiver is now reset to its factory default settings

    hi,
Can you tell me what did you mean by this ( Is there a reset procedure that involves pressing a series of controls?).

    hi,

There is no other factory reseting procedure for yamaha Avr. Remember one thing first you have to press and hold the "Straight/Effect" and then press the standby button. Hold the two buttons pressed until (say for 5 to 8 seconds) "Advanced Menu" appear on the panel's display.

. "Program Selector" knob means Program knob

    OK

I have a Yamaha RX-V681. It went into protection mode.

If your Yamaha RX-V681 is not responding after following the steps to exit protection mode, it is possible that there is a more serious issue with the unit. It is recommended to unplug the unit and let it sit for a few minutes before attempting the procedure again. If this does not work, it may be necessary to have the unit serviced by a professional technician or contact Yamaha customer support for further assistance.

Hi;my Yamaha receiver RX-V 373 will not turn on. No power. No display. It may be that the unit went into protection mode. Can anyone there, help me, restart my unit back to factory condition?

If you have power it should click before protection mode and have a light showing it's in protection mode.
After the transformer there's some resistors that have failed if it's in protection mode normally it's one or two that have failed, you can get the reading of what they should be by testing them

Power shut down due to protection circuit activated 3 times

I had the exact problem with the same model. The way to reset it to the factory default is quite easy (you will lose all previous settings). first , Make sure that it is plugged. Then press on the "info" and the "tone control" at the same time. Keep pressing for a few seconds. you will hear a "clicking" sound and the receiver will turn on.

Yamaha Receiver won't turn on after USB plugin in. Help!

Unit is in protect mode. Sometimes an ipod draws too much current through the usb jack and causes the unit to shut down due to an abnormal voltage being detectected. Press and hold the 'info' and 'tone control' buttons and push power. This should turn the unit on. Turn it back off and turn it on again and should power up normally. If the ipod continues to make the unit shut down when plugged in, try and make sure it is fully charged before plugging it into the receiver - this may help.

Htr-3064 reset power on

I had a Power surge in Brisbane this week and found my YAMAHA HTR-3064 AV receiver unresponsive. Thanks to the Squish22's post, I tried the above approach, which is also listed for another Yamaha model (RX-V667) Unfortunately nothing happened. Another post suggested holding the 'straight' button as you power up to go into "advanced" menu (under DILLIGAF's post.) This also did not work.
I thought I'd try pressing all 3 buttons and powering up, which worked a treat. so here's exactly what I did:

Yamaha HTR-3064 - Protection mode reset:
  1. Remove the Power cord form mains power and wait 10 seconds.
  2. Plug cord in and turn on wall socket power.
  3. While holding down "info", "straight" and "tone control" buttons, press "main zone" power button. I got a click and it was good to go from there.
I had all of my speakers unplugged at the time and tested off the headphone jack before plugging all the cables back in again. Not sure if I needed to unplug everything, but I was about to dismantle and look for a fuse when I tried this method.
Saved me a new system / service fee. Hope it helps you too.
Thanks Squish22 and DILLIGAF for the head-start!

The protection circuitry has been activated 3 times consecutively and as a safety precaution, capability to turn on the power is disabled.

If there is no apparent cause for the protection mode activating (such as shorted speakers, burning smell, blown fuses, lighting strike or mains power surges), reset the protection as follows and see what happens.

Connect power cord to mains and wait 5 seconds or so. While holding down "info" and "tone control" buttons, press "main zone" power button briefly and release, but keep "info" and "tone control" buttons pressed for at least 3 more seconds. The unit should power up. Assuming the reason for the protection has passed or been fixed, the unit can now be turned off and then back on with the "main zone" power button to restore normal operation mode.
If the protector activates again, the fault is still present and the unit needs to be repaired, ideally by a Yamaha authorised repairer.
There are dangerous voltages present in high power amps and a lot of grunt in terms of stored energy - best left to trained technicians.

After power outage, the units internal saftey switch has activated. How do i reset the reciever? It's a Yamaha RX A1000

If the protection circuitry has been activated 3 times consecutively you may have to contact Yamaha as it says in the Troubleshooting section of the manual.

http://usa.yamaha.com/products/audio-visual/aventage/rx-a1000_black__u/

Generally speaking, an amp attempts to protect itself from heat, shorts, overloads and operator exuberance by refusing to turn on or stay on.

Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output or marginally low impedance loading by the speakers; and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.

You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.

If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'naked'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced and competent hands-on tech.

Check for loose speaker connections at the speaker as another possible root cause for intermittent shutdown.

Yamaha RX-V365 Receiver I have no sound coming from my front R & L speaker terminals, the sub, rear L & R are all fine. Independently or factory set-up nothing comes out? Can anyone suggest what...

The front channels have a separate protection circuit from the rears and sub sections. It is possible that the unit i is not turning on the fronts. Without seeing the unit and testing some parts, I can't state for sure either the problem or solution. Can you provide more history? Did this just happen out of the blue?

Yamaha RX V490 Turning itself Off

The amp is in protect mode which means that the output section has a problem. With nothing connected, there are defective parts inside the unit. This type of problem is not likely to have been caused by any shipping damage. I would guess that the output transistors are shorted.
