I had that same problem, find the remote and use that to turn it on / off. It solved the problem for me, for whatever reason. You will need to use the remote until the buttons start working again, took mine a few days. I have no idea what was wrong with it.

Edit: I Still get notifications about this 11 years later. I did figure out what was wrong with it. In my case, the E1 notification was because the control panel on the AC was frozen and not working. But the remote control still worked.

Where do I check the freon gas level in my Haier CPRB08XCJ

There are generally no fitting to connect to the sealed systems of portable air conditioners. You can buy a 'saddle valve' that will pierce the suction side and allow you to check low side pressure, but they will allow a very slow leak in most cases.
It likely uses R134a instead of Freon.

Unit has been working but suddenly stopped and won't turn on. what is the problem?

Look for a little compartment of slot for a fuse or a reset button. Do you have the owners manual? That might give you some solutions as well.

Displays "E1" and resetting the

E1-Automatic filter clean reminder.

Turn the air conditioner OFF and unplug it. NOTE: The air conditioner must be unplugged for the automatic filter clean timer to reset.

Clean the filter. See the Care and Cleaning section in your use&care manual. After cleaning, replace the filter and plug the air conditioner back in.

E1 error code on air conditioner

I called haier about this error code. E1 indicates that a button on the control panel or the reomote is stuck. I was instructed to unplug the unit and push each button at least 5 times, one at a time. Plug the unit back in, and this fixed my problem with error E1 and the unit works fine.
