I had that same problem, find the remote and use that to turn it on / off. It solved the problem for me, for whatever reason. You will need to use the remote until the buttons start working again, took mine a few days. I have no idea what was wrong with it.
Edit: I Still get notifications about this 11 years later. I did figure out what was wrong with it. In my case, the E1 notification was because the control panel on the AC was frozen and not working. But the remote control still worked.
The E1 code is an error code that appears on the LED temperature display of some digital air conditioners. unplug it. NOTE: The air conditioner must be unplugged for the automatic
filter clean timer to reset.
Clean the filter. See the Care and Cleaning section in your use&care manual. After cleaning, replace the filter and plug the air conditioner back in.
