If the washer itself has an odor but mildew odor is best handles by hot water and bleach. If you have a sanitary cycle or hot wash then select it and add a cup of bleach directly to the wash tub and let the cycle run through. If it is a front load washer be sure to wipe the boot down with bleach also. This procedure may need to be repeated periodically to prevent the mildew from coming back.
The 2nd cause of odor in a washer can be build up of detergent and soils in the sump area. Most detergents and softeners have dyes and perfumes that can go sour after a while and build up in the sump of the washer. There is tub cleaner call "Washer Magic" that will clean the tub and freshen it up. Also, be sure to leave the door open on your washer when not in use. This will keep the moisture down and help to keep the mildew from growing.
