Compaq laptop wont go to password screen

You will need to boot the computer with a boot disk. If you do not have one that came with the computer, you will need to contact your manufacturer or the store where you purchased the computer and get one from them. A boot disk cost anywhere from $10-20. When starting the computer, have the boot disk in the drive and when the prompt asks where do you want to load from, select your DVD/CD drive.

Sound problem

Check Windows Audio services is running.

Click "Start"button, Select "Run", type "services.msc", press enter.
Scroll down till you find Windows Audio, make sure the services is started and configuring it to start up automatically by right clicking on "Windows Audio" and selecting "properties".

If you have somehow or by mistakenly uninstalled the audio driver, your sound won't work.

Right click on "My Computer" icon, Select "Manage", Click on "Device manager ", expand "Sound,Video and Game controller" and make sure your Audio driver is listed there.

In case you are missing the driver, I'm giving you the download page link from where you can download the Audio driver.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=3177516&

Select the Operating System and install the driver if the driver files are missing or corrupted.

Hope this will solve your problem.

Just purchased a compaq presario secondhand--is

All the laptops I have seen since the 1980's charge the battery, if it is installed, while the laptop is running. They charge at a slower rate if you are using the computer, and faster if you just plug it in and leave the computer powered off.
Most have a 'charging' led [green or amber] indicating that the battery is being charged when you plug the laptop in and leave it turned off. If you don't see any indication, check that the battery is connected firmly and that the connectors are not damaged. If possible, try the battery in another machine or a different battery in your machine.

It was the most convenient method and affordable too. Those guys have all the major brands with specific model numbers, series and it's all genuine. http://laptopkey.com
They sell the retainer clips with the key cap for just $5. Do check it out.

Jeanie, there is the possibility that your hard drive has failed. Lets try though to boot from the windows install disc. Put the cd in and boot the computer up. If the hard drive has failed the laptop might try to automatically boot the windows program off the disc. If it does go through the steps below to try and fix the windows installation if it is salvagable.

Windows Start-up Errors

First, The basics. You will need a Windows CD. If you only have a recovery disk set like the ones from a HP or Compaq, they will not do what you want. You can normally use a Dell disk, also retail box disks (Windows Purchased from the store), or some OEM versions of Windows will work (most of these will have the Microsoft hologram on them).
When you get the system started and it finds your startup disk you will see a screen that says Press any Key to boot from CD. I normally use the space bar as my any key and then you should see a blue screen that says Windows setup in the left hand corner. Wait until you see the welcome to setup screen and then click the "R" key to get to the Recovery Console How long it takes to get to each of these depends on the speed of your system, but I will tell you that it will take a few minutes to finally get to the Console.
Once you are at the Recovery Console you will be given at least one choice of Windows installations. Normally the choice you want is the number 1 choice. Click the number 1 key at the "top" of the keyboard and click enter.
You will be given a message asking for the administrator password. Unless someone or something has messed with your computer there is no password so you just click the enter key.
This will bring you to a prompt that says:
C:\WINDOWS>
Type: cd \ and then click enter
( Note: between "cd" and "\" there should be a "blank space" otherwise the command won't work. If you find that a command hasn't worked make sure you typed it correctly. These are similar to old DOS commands where spaces had to go between each command so DOS knew where one command stopped and another started.)
You are now at the ROOT of the drive where it all begins. The Prompt should now say C:\>
Now type: CHKDSK /R and click enter.
The chkdsk / r command also includes the P command and will also look for lost recoverable information in bad sectors.
Now after the chkdsk has run type: FIXBOOT then click enter.
It may prompt you with a warning but continue through it and once fixboot has finished type: EXIT and click enter.
Your system should reboot and when it does click the F8 button to get a windows start menu. Use the up or down arrow to highlight the LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION and click enter. If it was a simple drive error this should have fixed it.

The computer starts up and then shuts down, then

First things to establish, if you are running from battery whether the laptop is charged, if you are running from AC whether the cable works properly. If both of these are ok, have you made any hardware changes recently? If so, check that the are securley installed and if so then remove if possible. Failing that there may be a problem with the power supply to the motherboard, something you may be able to address if you have an intermediate understanding of internal components.

My laptop boots and then reboots in a continuous

this is a case of os corruption somehow..!!..may b a virus/trojan or hardware or software is responsible..
all u need is the os boot cd anyway..

probably now u got two way out:
gotosome cyber n download win xp pro sp2, using any bit-torrent client(likeutorrent) from torrent site (eg. mininova.org so on)..make a boot diskn try..
1) copy the file in windows repair mode or from any identical os n put it in place as stated above..
OR 2) reinstall os..
(totake data backups u gotta connect the hdd to another pc/laptop, for suchcases a hdd-case is available in the local spare market, it'll makebehave ur hdd to act as an external removable drive)..

this canalso b a symptom of faulty/defective of RAM..pen clean/remove carbon& or oxide formed on the teeth with an eraser n resit it..[it'll bmore prominent, that if itz cause by ram or not,..if during normaloperation, a Blue Screen appears/Memory Dump]
though, sometimes itz also caused by the m/b..

if once u can login, do the following:
hv a licensed and UPDATED antivirus installed (i prefer avg/kaspersky, , without updation a full version antivirus is useless)..
download, install n run microsoft kb890830..http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=AD724AE0-E72D-4F54-9AB3-75B8EB148356&displaylang=en..
download n run Startup Control Panel..http://download.cnet.com/Startup-Control-Panel/3000-2094_4-10039330.html..'removealltheunnecessary startup items from here..(if u can't find what toremove, post me/us in ur comment with all the items listed in each nevery tabs herein)..
remove all unnecessary software from add/remove programs..
download, install n run 'Advanced System Care Pro'..http://download.cnet.com/Advanced-SystemCare-Pro/3000-2086_4-10399324.html..
disable thefollowing: a) 'Automatically Restart' right click onmy computer->properties->advanced->startup nrecovery->(uncheck on the) Automatically Restart; b)'ErrorReporting 'right click onmy computer->properties->advanced->errorreporting->disable error reporting->(uncheck on the) 'but notify mewhen critical error occur'..
Increase the size of Virtual Memory, Initial: 1440; Maximum: 2880

always better to seek professional advice of ur system admin/vendor....
