I have always taken my memory card from the camera and placed in my computer to download the phon

Try to use your camera and usb cable to recover any picture that's there. You need to format the memory card. Scan for errors. Fix it.. format it again inside the camera. And then also try to check for any updates available for your laptop drivers.

How can I remove a protected card so that I can take pictures?

Most cards have a little switch on the side that turn protection on and off. Press the card in, it'll pop out. Move the switch, and plug it back in.

Cannot get camera to download to computer to get pics

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries. Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo management program such as Picasa: Organize edit and share your photos

What does it mean protected card?

You didn't specify the model of your Fujifilm camera so I'm assuming it uses SD cards. SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.
