Best Buy sells these for about $30. Other sellers do so for about $55. If it is under warranty, I suppose you could make use of that. Otherwise, I cannot imagine any fix for this that would cost $30. No make and model provided but.... Of course it isn't safe to eat!! It is likely a mixture of oil, broken seal dust and a little metal/rust creamed with a drop of condensation. 50 years as as a chef and I wouldn't serve that or eat it. Fix it or thrown the machine away! These machines are normally 20 years old and get used 3 times every 2 years.

If it was fine before stored away, then either the power is not getting to the machine, (rodent damage or corroded contacts) or there is a control fault.
