HP 75 17" CRT Monitor "res" Questions

my samsung syncmaster 2233sw shows multiple displayes when i take it to its max res. i use win xp sp2 and have nvidia 8600gt gfx card. the monitor works well on lower res but only shows this problem ...

When i try to change to res it says out of range. it stays at 800 x 600. Max Sync Rate (V x H) 76 Hz x 83 KHz Max Resolution 1280 x 1024 / 60 Hz Try changing the Hz to get it to accept a higher res.
