A few suggestions:
Check the air intake and see if it is dirty, plugged air filter. you
can clean with a good air intake cleaner...follow instructions on the
can.Those years
were noted for problems in the dist cap. check it for cracks.
Check the pressure regulator it is on the left side fuel rail on the engine.
I would for sure test it before just replacing it. Test it with a fuel pressure tester.
Dirty injectors could do the same thing.
Low pressure could also be from a worn pump.

I have changed the air filter.
If the problem were caused by dirt in the fuel tank, wouldn't the symptom be low fuel pressure? If I have 60 PSIG at the fuel injector rail, and can press the valve button on the guage and get a solid squirt stream, then it would seem I have unrestricted fuel supply to the fuel injector rail.
