Sound like a problem with the fuel sending unit, its a device located on fuel pump (generally atached module).

is the fuel pump running in the correct direction if you joined the wires up yourself this may be what has happened if it was not a plug. hope this helps
I would first try putting a small amount of starter fluid in the air cleaner when it refuses to start. If it starts then, it is likely low fuel pump pressure which can be caused by a clogged fuel filter, bad fuel pump, or a poor wiring connection to the pump.
