It should not. The burner heats a manifold and air is drawn thru the hot manifold to warm the air. As long as the manifold Is in good shape, no co2 will contaminate the warmed air. However, if the fan does not blow air over the manifold, the the thermal fuse will be blown and stop the heater from working at all. Fan noise is not good. Get professional help asap
A leaking exhaust manifold could make a ticking noise. So could a lifter or valve. The exhaust noise would be louder under load. If the carb is running too lean, or you have a vac leak, the lean fuel mixture could make the exhaust leak worse, and cause the loss of power.

you will want to go to an exhaust shop to have them look for broken welds or brackets as well as the catalytic converter. if it has come apart inside it will create this issue. common.
check intake manifold air temp sensor and engine coolant sensor...one may be out of range but not enough to turn on dash light. tests and specs can be found in chiltons or haynes, test is done with digital multi-meter.
