Have a 1998 Jaguar XJ8L, it is making a loud clacking sound, sounds like its coming from the pass. side of the car. Could it be piston rings, broken piston skirts, crack bearings, Rod bushing. Miss my late husband talent of fixing them all. Please help. I love my Jag

    Thanks

What I would try first is replace the oil pump. you say you're not getting oil to your lifters. no oil pressure is a sign of bad oil pump. I had a ford fairmont do the same thing, and once I replaced the oil pump; put a WIX oil filter on. and used a blended(syn and reg) oil, it fixed it. don't start anymore until you've done this.

Carried my 2005 free star to local shop and they said they thought it was a lifter or a rocker arm problem it makes a loud knocking sound..

Takes about 1 1/2 hours to figure it out. I can remove both valve covers in about an hour. 15 to 20 minutes to see which one is bad, if one of them are bad. Lifters and rockers arms usually make a ticking sound. Knocking is usually the piston rod. could be bearings at the crank or the wrist pin at the top of the rod. I've seen valve springs broken and only cause a ticking noise.

Can lifters be replaced

Oh yea, lifters can be replaced , best if you replace cam an lifters together ! Loud knocking is not usually associated with lifters , they usually make a ticking noise ! Knocking noise is most usually in the bottom of the motor , main or rod bearings . most of the time rod bearings !

I have a loud knocking from the cam tower on a 3.8 2001 ss monte carlo. My bet is that it is a collapsed lifter. I removed the valve cover on the front side of the engine, when running and a i use a long...

Make sure the rocker arm is torqued to the proper specifications. (torque specifications: torque to 11 lb.ft, then tighten the bolt an additional 90 degrees)
If so, then your diagnosis is correct, barring a bent push rod.

There is a knocking noise under hood think it may be a lifter is that something that can be fixed with out going to a shop?i put some lucas oil in it the noise stoped for a day our so i dont wount to have...

Have you checked the oil level on the dipstick? Low oil would cause the lifters to make a ticking sound. This noise will be coming from higher in the engine like under the valve covers. If the oil is full, you may have a lifter that is sticky. There are products you get at any auto parts store to add to your oil to free up sticky lifters and quiet them. However, you said it's a knocking noise. Knocking would also result from low oil level. Seriously low! If the oil is full and you have a knocking noise, it could be main bearings, connecting rod bearings on the crank or the pins on the top end of the connecting rods that hold them to the pistons. It could also be the piston skirts banging on the side of the cylinder due to worn rings. Any of these knocking noises would come from lower in the engine like in the block. Again, there are products to add to your oil to add extra cushion between surfaces to quiet this situation but you may not be far from a major overhaul. You didn't mention how many miles are on the engine but very low oil levels could have damaged any of these parts quickly.
Hope this helps. Good luck. I hope it's low oil or stciky lifters.

There is a loud knocking noise under the right valve cover, what could be the cause?

It could be a collapsed lifter, a bent pushrod or a bad rocker arm. It could also be a bad piston wrist pin or rod bearing, and the noise sounds like it's up top.

Loud engine knock sounds like theconnecting rods in a 3.5L v-6 2002 trooper

If the engine knock is coming from deep inside the engine, the I agree, the rod is knocking.
If the sound is coming from closer to the top, it could be a valve lifter or push rod you are hearing. This isn't as bad, they last longer and synthetic oil or oil treatment helps.
If this doesn't happen all the time, if it's occasional or you hear a pinging noise, you could just have a bad knock sensor.

Have a 1990 Z71 4wd that with loud engine knock.

I'd consider some fresh, clean oil & filter change first of all, if it hasn't been done . drive it for a while providing it isn't too bad, & see if it goes away, if not get back to us.
